Hi Guys,

Just noticed today that when I start the engine when cold, there is a distinct whining noise that lasts for about 10 seconds before it goes away completely (and no it's not coming from the passenger)...

Anyone experienced something like this before?

maybe it's the driver?

or a belt?

The sound is still there but rather than going for 10 sec, it's only going for 5 now...

Maybe itll be gone in a few days LOL

Maybe it's the supercharger you've never noticed in the engine bay

Looks like sensible answers are not on the menu.

Check belts - try a bit of soap on them to see if that cures it. If not it could be, PS pump (if fitted), AC compressor (if fitted), alternator, water pump or cam belt tensioner.

Assuming no one has secretly installed a supercharger my money is on imminent water pump failure

Both my waterpumps made a metalick sounding noise .....for about 12mths before they failed. It was more a sort of a constant noise but it would be there always.....not dissapaer.... until the waterpump got replaced


I'd ceratinly be checking in JBT's & sprangas direction.

The weird thing is that this noise is only present on cold startup - When I restart the car when the engine is warm there is no noise

Also, if it were the belts... wouldn't the noise be constant (ie not go away after 10 or so seconds?)

I think the culprit may be the AC condenser as that has always been noisy since the last regassing.

Not always, that's why it was suggested as a possible cause.

The belts on the Suzuki shriek on a cold start. Warm, they're fine. Put a bit of soap on them and it helped (only shrieks occasionally).

Managed to do a quick check this morning.

I put the key in the ignition and turned it so the radio was on (without starting the engine)

The noise was LOUD as I had my bonnet up. Was following the noise and it is coming from the Fan in the Radiator. It sounds like the fan is rubbing against the metal...

Is it possible that the fan is somehow loose and needs to be tightened up?

Was the engine still cold at this time? The fan should not spin unless triggered when the coolant temp reaches a certain level. Check that the shroud around the fan is not warped/bent. With the key removed check the fan for excessive movement. Obviously spinning is fine, but it should not have too much wobble.

If there is a wobble, is it easy to tighten the fan blades?

if the fan is loose thyey are easy to tighten up

there is 4 bolts at the front. You wil need a 10mm spanner. ring spanner preferred. schouln't be too difficult to reach them.
