Clutch recommendation for 2004 SE *NOW WITH PROBLEMS*

Exedy is my current plan but which one?
1. w'end car with as many track days/club events/club runs as $$$ will allow us to run in
2. She currently has 150rwkw but I'd like to think the clutch I get now will still be in place when the new manifold and turbo are able to be afforded(under 200rwkw).
3. The missus has to be able drive it but she's getting into the whole track day thing too and can leg press more than me
4. Anywhere in Brissie with good price and service?
5. How much should I expect for labour?
6. Whast else should be done while at it? EG: Machining flywheel, replacing bearings etc(currently 38XXXkm on clock)?
Thanks guys.....

i would get the excedy button clutch. the guys at mania seem to think that the organic centred clutch is not reliable past 160wkw. there is always the option of getting carbon ones but they are expensive

i would be careful with a clutch with strong bite without upgrading the driveline or gearbox. This is because ultimately they will be taking the strain. I would recommend a heavy duty organic clutch to save the gearbox =]

yeah, I don't need to explain to themissus why we need a new box/diff 'cause the clutch was too much.
I see the clutch as a fues in the drivtrain but at the same time, I'd like the next one to hold up a lil' longer than 38km and after the next round of planned mods.

the se box is stronger anyway isn't it? convert to a 5 speed - they are much cheaper then a new clutch and are probably a bit stronger then the stock 6 speed.

Contact Jim Berry from Race Clutch in QLD.
http://www.motorsportworld.com.au/outlets/raceclutch/Have a chat to him about your requirements, he is THE clutch Guru, and if he can't help you no one can

I'm also in the process of choosing a relevant clutch for my SE and my projected power level is going to be similar to yours.
A nice heavy duty organic full-face clutch with a higher clamp should hold the power no problem. He built the clutch for my 200kw+ @ all four wheels Evo, and it held up perfectly, never slipped but wasn't harsh enough to damage the driveline.
Driving with some mechanical sympathy can also help!

/end thread.

Do you know where I can purchase this "mechanical sympathy"? It sounds like I may need to replace or at least update mine

The stock 6sp is stronger than the stock 5sp. The SE box is stronger than both. The clutches are exactly the same for all 1.8 equipped boxes. Either go a berry or get an exedy 4 puck ceramic sprung button clutch. They are livable on the street. If you are going to big HP - the whole car is a compromise anyway.

I've been quoted $385 for removal/machine flywheel/refit. Does this sound about right? Seems pretty reasonable to me......
Jim sounds like a top bloke and very helpful.
CT, I think 200rwkw will be the extreme end of what I'm trying to achieve. It'll probably get pegged closer to 180rwkw. I'm certainly not after a dyno queen, I just want something that gets outta corners quick with a more response than the stocko turbo/ECU combo can provide. Hell, if injectors are enough to get me close to 160~170rwkw, that's probably where she'll stay......untill I get bored

Prices are OK - aftermarket ones are $400+. Put it this way, if you get over 200rwkw, you will start to blow up stuff that isn't designed for that kind of power. If 188rwkw race cars on slicks can use stock SE boxes and stock driveshafts then you will be OK. As for being bored, you're tough to please if a regular turbo NB isn't good enough, let alone one making 180+rwkw - time for a Veyron I'd suspect.

hmmmmm, now we're talkin'. I wonder if Bugatti would take ASE05 as a trade

We'll she gets d/o tonight @ a local guy that Jim Berry recomended to have the clutch removed and sent off to Jim to take a looksie to see what he can do. He doesn't have the SE listed on any of his parts catalogues yet so he'd like to have the clutch in hand to see what can be done. Hopefully get her back B4 the w'end

Who's this through again? I'm getting a bit of slippage at the top of the boost (mainly noticing it on the highway if I really give it a bootfull) so a new and upgraded clutch might be on the cards, even though I'm happy with the existing boost level and don't seek to increase.....
