gearbox and differential oil

Hi guys,
how do i know if i need to change my gearbox and differential oil? I have no idea when my car had its box and differential oil has last been changed so i guess i'm looking for any cues. It's a 01 NB8B with 77k kms

IIRC its around the 70k or 80k mark according to the users manual.
Just do it on doggy day its in a few weeks.
Bring a pump bottle to pump the liquids in.
When you jack up the car it should be level so you fill it up correctly (bring some jack stands if you can).
I have all the sockets you need and a long breaker bar for us week nubes. (undo the fill plugs before you undo the drain plugs).

Or a 1.2m length of 12mm garden hose and a funnel to poor the liquids in. Much easier and quicker

yeah but it also says every 4 years or so, whichever sooner, so i have a feeling it has been changed. In any case you're right. Are gearbox and diff oil different? also do i need some sort of specialist pump bottle? i don't have any of that at home.
also, where do i get the oils and what viscosity?

oh you may want to get the rubber upper and lower shift boot things. They are only like 30 bucks or so. I remember mine were torn to shreds...

so um, what would be a good oil for the diff and the box? also where would i get it?

IIRC EPX 80W-90 for the diff, about 900mL-1L for torsen and I thnk around double that for an open diff.
And I think a straight 80 gear oil for the box, or a 75W-90 synthetic. I used penrite full syn 75W-90 in mine, shifts quite smoothly. It took a little under 2L from memory.

ok cheers. How much would this all cost? i figure that i will need 3 litres of the stuff (2 for the box, 1 for the open diff) going by miata.net's fluid change guide.

Open diff will likely take more than 1L from memory. I think depending on the shop and brand, gear oil is around 12.50 a litre or so.

has anyone tried the drill pump
i saw it at autobarn when i was after a pump
not sure how good it was but I'm sure it wouldnt' be as tiring as using one of those hand pumps

Hose and funnel works a treat - cheap and reliable too.
