A RAM intake has an inlet or pipework facing forward so the air gets \"rammed\" into it as you drive along, a cold air intake gives the filter access to cooler air than the \"under bonnet\" temperature.
Wayne, MX-5 club has a burger run this Tuesday I think (i should know i'm organising it!) .. you're welcome to come along or meet us at the start point and I can show you the Blingtake in all its glory.
With some of these systems you may loose some low end torque and gain some top end power.
One solution would be to buy the pod filter first and stick that on your stock intake runner, then change the intake runner and add a heat shield later.
I think I even have a spare couple of povo pods you could \"test fit\" and drive around the block to feel the difference. Might help you decide if you want to buy a pod filter or not.

It is certainly desirable
If you are aiming for the performance increase, the insulation of the intake air from the rest of the air in the engine bay helps you extract that extra little bit of performance
But if you just like it for the sound, you probably needn't bother
Tiny point to add : from a legal point of view, heat shields are required!

Looking at the engine bay, unless you can plumb the intake out to the front, I reckon you won't get any \"cooler\" air unless the car was moving. To me any heat shields are dubious. Not sure if anyone has successfully plumbed out to the front without the filter picking up all kinds of rubbish.
