I have recently purchased a cold air intake for my NB and I'm worried about the open hole at the top of the pod that came with it and I have no previous experience with pod filters so is it normal?

regardless I was doing a bit of research into it and came across this article which tests 10 pod filters for flow rate and filtration

thought some people might be interested especially how the performace and price seem to have no real correlation to the performance

Also here is an article that compares the performance figures of an NB8B with the stock filter then with a pod filter, with dyno readouts
probably best to save these ones then rotate them to read since they are in landscape thanks to the low upload resolution for portrait, each is about 900KB

So the range of flows was 473.3 to 601 cfm... not exactly a massive range (or more importantly, absolute loss) when you scale that down to the pressure drop experienced by a typical engine's actual air flow rate.

I cant remember the brand, but the cotten filter found to flow the highest was the one I had on the SE. Gave it a nice induction note (no longer sounded like a pulsar), and made the BOV audible

K&N are popular for a reason ;)

Its not all about flow, no filter would be the best for flow...

Remember you have one on there to get some engine protection.

That gain is very optimistic, I doubt anyone will gain that much from just pod filter.

i dunno where they got that gain from...but i didnt gain 10% power increase when i chucked on my pod...

10% is bs. the best filter system i have ever seen gained about 7% and it costs a fortune.

this is a very impressive gain of 13.8hp on a 198hp engine. no way a simple open pod would gain 10%.

Replacing my standard airbox with a pod gave me 10% fuel economy increase but that's mostly in the removal of the airbox.

Crazy that the 3A tops the bunch in both tests.

Interesting that they made that much gain from simply slapping a pod on the end of the existing piping.

I think I got a 2kw gain at the wheels with my setup I got from suzitech.
It's about a 3% gain, which is tiny compared to what they suggest in that article.

SM: What CAI did you get?

Funny, I only just installed a DIY filter today. Pretty basic at this stage. But certainly has changed the engine note. Will relocate the windscreen washer tank or add a curved pipe to use the space in the top corner.

I got the no drill CAI that mania sells but isn't on their site anymore

So it's almost identical to the one above except there's a shield protecting the pod from the engine yeah?

How do you find it? I wouldn't mind comparing yours and mine to see how they differ next time I see you. We'll have to go for a spin in each others' cars

Not really identical, it replaces all the intake piping from the throttle body, and it places the filter more directly behind the headlight, but yes it does have the heatsheild
