Hi guys,
i have been having the whining noise from the gearbox, and most probably it is the bearings (1, 2 and 3 rd gear whine)... it is getting a little worst for the last month or so...
Do you guys know where i can take it in sydney for reconditioning and how much i should be looking at paying? I can just take the gearbox out myself and take it to the shop for the reconditioning...
i do not want to get another box as i have no other problems with this one other than whining...
thanks in advance...

At a guess I would say Mania should be able to do it?

I wouldn't trust a normal mechanic to do up a gearbox.
Only a gearbox specialist can really do a good job.
If you've ever taken apart a gearbox, you'll know what I mean.
Even in big dealerships, they either have a specialist in house, or send their gearboxs to a local expert. they wouldn't let just any mechanic have a go at it.
Where abouts are you silvermiata?
There is a very good gearbox guy in Hornsby Heights that Mania uses.
He installed my Guru diff for me on their recomendation.
As a young lad, a friend of mine and myself decided that we would re-build the gearbox in my friend's mother's car as all the synchros were worn out.
We got the box out OK and then we started to pull it down.
I must have removed something I shouldn't have, and half the gearbox innards shot off all over the place with absolutely no way that we could even fathom how to put it all back.
We ended up collecting all the pieces and taking to a gearbox guy in Mosman, but I think he closed down about 30 years ago.
In many cars, the gearbox is worth as much, if not more than an engine, and it is far more complicated than an engine too with thousands of parts all put together very precisely.

depending on your mileage it would be a good idea to have the syncros inspected while the box is out.
so does anyone have a rough idea about cost?
my synchros are pretty shot - they don't always play ball despite me feeding them new synth oil. should i save up for a rebuild or swap for a 2nd hand box? is buying a 2nd hand box as much of a lottery as it sounds?

Could be your diff too. Diff noise sounds like it's coming from the gearbox. Change the oil in that too.

... and then diff noises can be caused by the wheel bearings ...
... and the wheel bearing noises can be caused by the tyres ...
You can spend weeks on this.

The Pirelli P6000's on my NA made very authentic stuffed wheel bearing noises.

Sorry to say, I don't have his details, as he put my diff in about 5 years ago.
However, a quick call to Mania should sort it out, as they use him all the time.

All tyres did it for me on our NA but only when the roof was up. Quiet at all speeds up on a hoist or with the roof down though.

Have had my car at a certain reputable MX5 expert down Ringwood way the last week to have a couple of dings repaired. Asked them to have a drive and listen to the gearbox which is making a grinding noise under load in 4th and top. They reckon the 'box is stuffed and $880 for a fully reconditioned replacement, plus another $200 'or so' for the labour. That's about $1200 all up when GST's included. (Don't ask me how they work out GST for a reco part.

) Pretty stiff as I'm pretty sure they're also going to recommend a new clutch whilst they're at it.
Maybe an overhaul's a better option. Slugoid, how much did they hit you for labour to get the gearbox in and out?
