new waterpump, timing belt & bits.

Postby StanTheMan » Sat Sep 29, 2007 6:05 pm

changed all the bits today, waterpump, timing belt. tension pulley, runner, camshaft seals & all.

Pretty sure I 've got the timing marks lined up correct. But its making one hell of a racket. I can only assume I've missed tightening something. Most likely the tension pulley..

dammit.....its all got to come off again. & there i was making damm sure i don't have to go in again to correct the timing mark.

gawwwd.... I'm having a drink.

rattle noise comes from front somewhere. any Ideas.

for discussion sake.....

I'll be doing my 200,000km service next weekend. Keep us posted. Parts I have ordered are t-belt, crank bolt, woodruff key, tensioner and spring, idler pulley, water pump, cam seals and crank seal. All OEM stuffs for a tick over $450.

Dont risk it mate, just pull it down and do it again to be sure. At least it's a long weekend!

I guess it just goes to show . when you rush things. They go pair shaped.

The better half got home & we had to be somewhere. So I pushed on rather than finishing it off this morning..

Sean, Yep I knew better than to drive it anywhere. I eneded up not making it to our dinner date. So Im back in the Dog house.

So I've made sure I've got all day today to get it right. No kids , No wife & no dinner date to get to,

Wuey......There is a list. I'm not in the mood to think right now..... I'll make it this arvo. But sounds like you got all the things obvious things. Mine was about $450 but it also included some bits for the pop up light & 2 Tie rod ends & all the waterpump seals.(3in total)

Take the rest of the day to paint patchy
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

chasing rattles........

ohhh patchy hasn't felt so solid in a long time. Those bearings in the waterpump have been making noise for at least 2 years.

I've got very light rattles in the doors. when the road surface gets a little dodgy so thats where i'm going.

Stan, I believe your car is also a '90 with SNC.

Your crankshaft seal should be good for another 100K. My keyway looked perfect during the last belt change, and I expect the same this time. New crank bolt and correctly oriented new woodruff key plus loctide should ensure another trouble free 100K service.

I did order the waterpump gasket but am not sure if the kit also includes the gasket for the waterpump inlet. Can I trouble you to tell me the part number/s for all gaskets related to the waterpump? What's the gasket ring \"o\" for, part number? Thanks.

It was until 3 years ago. The car is a 89 NA6. A 1991 LNC engine was fitted fitted30k km ago (3 years now.)
The OEM waterpump does not come with any seals. Mazda recomends to use some plasic seal out of a tube. But some respectable members here suggested to use the proper seals.

I don't know what the part no. is I got all my stuff from MX5parts UK

this is the one I used & it fits very nicely
http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/product_info. ... cts_id/702
the Part no on the invoice is
SI2913
or alt B36615165

hope that helps

Thanks mate. I'm pretty sure the Mazda guy told me about that \"o\" ring thingy when I ordered the parts. Otherwise, I shall pony to a general spare parts shop to find a good substitute.

Hi.

I had my timing belt done at 110,000
but water pump wasnt done. was told that would be \"overservicing\". right..

at least I get to pull it apart this time..

how long does the water pump last?

They will generally last for more than 100,000k. Most people just do them with the timing belts @ 100,000 cause most of the bits are apart anyway.

I had an engine with over 180,000 on it on the original pump before it started to fail.

Took it to mania and Dave hooked me up with a new pump and installation - I remember it was a Great price too.

What noises do stuffed water pumps make? Do they make a squealing noise like a stuffed bush bearing or a rattling noise like a stuffed ball bearing?

The front part of my engine developed some kind of gritting noise that sounded like a bearing fouled by fine sand around 150,000km. I suspected the waterpump. A change of coolant quickly fixed that. I think regular coolant replacement will definitely prolong the life of the waterpump.
