There is a way to adjust the timing manually on the VVT engines. There is a writ-up with pictures explaining how to do it. Some of the guys in the US with turbo's have done it. Not any real use on a non-turbo car but might be useful in your case. I'll se if I can find it on the net anywhere. Try going to miata.net

The valve timing is retarded Bevan, not the ignition timing. Pay attention. :P

The fix may be labour intensive depending on what is actually wrong with your car, but your car should go better after it's fixed.

If you're not happy with the fault diagnosis then go to another dealer and see what they have to say.
