I noticed recently my gearbox is a bit noisey, a rapid rattling sound.... when its about 2000-2500rpm off throttle and about 1/4 throttle, The noise is not there when it is out of gear rolling or clutch is out of gear. Its not that loud but I do notice it when the roof is up

Please help!!!

Are you sure it's not a heat shield or some other thing attached/near the transmission?

Could be worn bearings or selectors - both are a gearbox out and disassemble job.

I had a listen to the car from the post above, it sounded similar to mine just a tiny bit louder.
I notice that when I have my hard-top on there is a very slight noise coming from the gearbox. Cant hear it at all with the soft-top up though.

Andrew. :)

Are the rubber shift lever boots OK? Could be letting normal noises through too.

this sounds similar to my car... there is this quiet but harsh rattle coming from the gearbox or diff... but seems to be mostly on deceleration.
i hope its just my shift lever boot.

how do you check that?

Remove the centre console. Then remove the rubber boot (called an insulator) - it could be split and broken - around the gear lever and you'll see a smaller one where the lever goes into the gearbox.

hmmm its getting a bit annoying now, using different gear box oil had quiten it down a bit

check both the rubber boots... no rips

ummm seems like now the rattles happens even with the clutch depress/disengage. It rattles only at 1900-2100rpm on and off throttle

It could be the compression plate touching the flywheel... or something along those lines...

i am no mechanic so possibly suggest this idea to one, and see what they have to say.

I was told that this is why my car was making that noise.

Hope this helps...

Engine mounts stuffed? Something like a bolt or rock jammed somewhere between the engine or gearbox and the bodywork or subframe?
