So....chaps. How is it done. My heater core is......errr.... Fu&4d. So its been bypassed.
But how do you actually remove & replace it. Does the Dash Need to come off?
Or is it possible to take it out without the removal of the dash.

who's done it?
Is it possible to retrofit a NB heater core ?
Is there any advantage to refit a NB core ?

ive done it.
and i fit an NB box.

its newer, has more filters, and a nice aluminium core. the NA ones were copper! so good for a little weight saving..

i did it while i replaced dashes, apparently it can be done without ripping the dash out, but honestly, its a very very tough job.
dash removal is easy, just time consuming.

The NB heater core is different in a way that its possible to stop water flows through it.
In the NA this is not possible. Water continuesly flows through it. Just the air gets bypassed around it when heat is required.

So provided I make sure the NB core is open for water flow & It should make absolutely no difference.......

Water still flows continuously through the NB heater core the same as the NA one. I've never seen any water valves on the NB heater box. In my opinion the NA heater puts out a lot more heat than the NB one. But theoretically an NB one should be in better nick because it's newer.

I have no idea how you'd have any hope in hell of removing it with the dash in place.

I've had the dash out before......Doesn't particularly worry me......Plus its a great excuse to have another Dodgy Day

So ... if the NA one is copper it would probably last forever and all you'd need to do was to take it to a radiator shop and get it pressure cleaned .....

My core was bypassed when I bought the first na, yep, whole dash out job but it wasnt the core. The pipes on the engine side go into a bit of rubber tube, then to the core. The pipe split right near the join, so, all the symptoms but big dollars saved on the part. The radiator rebuilder offered to re-core for about 1/2 the price of a new one but a tested & cleaned 2nd hander was the best option but thankfully not needed.,

I don't know who said that, but be sure to slap them with a wet fish the next time you're in the channel!

Maybe it was me stating that the pipes leading to the core are different - I believe that the NB heater core mounts in a slightly different position. That coupled with the outlets being in a slightly different spot on the firewall means that the heater core pipes would not match up, and lead with the pipes jutting into the firewall somewhere instead of through the correct holes!
