How do you tell...

...if you have an LSD on your car?

I remember there was a thread here before but I couldn't find it. My car is an import and while I was browsing wikipedia it had this to say:

\"Standard transmission was 5-speed manual. Japan and the USA got an optional automatic transmission which proved unpopular; these markets also received an optional viscous limited slip rear differential, although were only available for cars with a manual transmission.\"

So by that it seems like NA's could be optioned from factory to have a viscous LSD.

Thanks in advance :)

Not in Australia. If you have an Aus delivered NA, you don't have an LSD from the factory, full stop.

If you have a Jap import Eunos Roadster, and it is a manual, then you MAY have depending on whether or not the oeiginal owner option one in when it was bought.

Yep that's what I thought :)

Is there some way to test this out without incurring severe traffic fines?

the kitty has a viscous LSD.

Several ways i found out...

Somewhere on www.miata.net/garage there is an article on how to tell what diff is what without opening it up.

Other way was when it was up on the hoist i turned one wheel and the other side went the same way (open diff the wheels spin opposite).

Personal opinion (and many others) is that the viscous LSD is nothing to write home about. It aids in stand still acceleration and a little in the wet. Other than that its pretty useless, through the twisty bits you wouldnt even know you had an LSD. It does an alright job getting the back out in the wet though.
