Hi,
I've read a number of times on this site, references to putting oil in the gear shift turret when refilling the gearbox. I'm putting the gearbox back in my NA6 and wanted to know (i) how much oil, if any, I should put into the turret, (ii) is that amount in addition to the handbook recommended fill quantity for the gearbox, and (iii) does that oil flow back into the main gearbox oil pool or does it remain in a separate sealed section in the turret.
Thanks for your learned input.
Michael
How much oil do I put into the gearbox turret ?

i actually did this last weekend. originally i thought it'd be 250ml from reading through miata net, but turns out thats way too much. about half a cup should do, perhaps quarter cup first though & see if it leaks away into the gearbox.
i shined a torch into my turret from above, had a little oil in there but was mostly gone from over 15 years of use
but that little bit that was in there indicates too me that the seal keeping the turret fluid seperate from the gearbox is still doing it's job.
the 6 speed gearboxes don't have the seal keeping the oil seperate, so they should use grease instead of gear oil. did you also replace the upper shifter boot?

There should be enough oil to cover the socket where the nylon covered ball at the bottom of the gearstick fits into. It doesn't need to be full. If you have a NB8B+ 6 speed you dont need to put oil into the turret as it drains back into the gearbox. Instead you should add a smear of grease to the moving parts on the gearstick.
