Sounds like an electronic speedo problem to me, do the late model cars have electronic speedo? If so it could be your sender or possible a problem with some of the cars wiring, maybe an earth. If it is still cable like the old ones then thats whack, I think they pretty much just work or they dont.

The electronic ones have a sensor in the side of the gearbox instead of a cable and gear so it could be the culprit...NFI how to tell though.

Electrical problems are difficult to diagnose. Mazda factory techs have exceptional docu on chasing down issues like this so why not try a dealer?

IF you are going over 50km/h though.
The ADR's only state that you need an accurate (+ or - 10%) speedo ABOVE 50km/h.
Below that speed, you don't need a speedo, according to ADR's, but try arguing that with a cop in a 40k School Zone.

aah........could be the source of your problem then, something has disengaged behind the speedo head
