I've been told that you can get a nicer exhaust note than the factory note by changing the tip on the end of the pipe without going to the expense of a comlete exhaust system. Can any one varify this and suggest what size, style and brand? I have an NBa.

IMHO.Nothing will make a 4 cylinder sound nice, The louder they are the worse the sound

i disagree GP, mine sounds pretty nice. deep and throaty.

it has a chrome tip on it, but i think there is a bigger zort attached to it. dunno what tho, it was like that when i bought the car.

If only there was some way of getting that fat MGB exhaust growl...

Hey Rodders. Just a tip by itself will not change the exhaust note but it will look better. Looking to pimp up the evo gold?

you would be suprised how much a difference just a tip can make!

I have had just about every concivable exhaust cobination at one tme or another

1st one was a bog cannon with a wait for it 6 inch tip! that was loud

I then went to two exhausts one either side with 2.5 tips (very quiet)

then single 2.5 allway through with a 4 inch tip getting nice growl and back off sounds

from there i went to twin three inch tips tiny bit to loud but went back down to single exhaust with 3 inch tip

This i think is the best combination!

even now with the turbo(turbo just refines the rumble even better)!

at idle its not a kidney shaking rumble but its definatly intimidating!
at speed it is not an intrusive low bass noise

I reckon at speed its probably the quietest exhaust i have done!
suttle but enough to give the aural delight that one wants from an exhaust!

simple things like putting a slight turn down in the pipe can take the top end noise off and tame it a bit

look at a rotor partiularly a worked one and you wont find many that have a straight exiting exhaust!

size of pipe will make a difference too

as will what you muffler is packed with
Mine are always like old school glass pack mufflers - straght through but a heavy perf tube to slow it down a bit.

if you have access to a welder and some tube you could go for days refining the sound!

just got to experiment to get what you want!

With the GLW's permission, I would like to get a bit more of a growl from the exhaust but nothing to feroucious. I would also like to put on a crome fuel cover and vent rings. Just a few subtles to make it a little more individual.

I just assumed that Rodders was talking about just the little shiney tip on the end without changing any pipe size at all. Agree with you though that changing mufflers and the amount of them can vary noise immensely. Better to copy someone's that you like and even then you might not end up with the same sound. I'm hoping to get the dual exit with the single muffler. Any idea how these sound? Suppose it will still depend on brand. Anyway Rodders I will talk to you on Thursday night and try to talk you around to the dark side . Mx5parts.co.uk have just introduced some plastic chrome plated vent rings for 11 pounds. Bargain

Speaking from personal experience, keeping the exhaust system the same, but changing tips, does make a difference to sound.

I had a full exhaust done on my MX some time ago. But I think the guy who did the tip, forgot to weld it on completely and just left it spot welded on in 3 spots.

The tip ended up falling off one day when I was washing the MX. So I went to Carco here in Canberra and Dave kindly welded on another one that he had in stock, that looked a lot nicer than the one that fell off. The old tip was a straight through tip - ie no curled in edge on it and also rather short.

The new tip was longer and also fatter as well and had the edge curled in at the end of the tip. I immediately noticed that the car sounded different and also it was quieter at any cruising speed as well.

My current system is X-Force Extractors, High flow cat, 2.5inch system all the way with a huge resonator in front of the rear axle and then a hi flow rear muffler which is an offset type but flow is straight through with a peforated pipe inside before the tip. Gives a nice note and doesn't drone at any speed. But you can hear it when you're on the gas.

So Zen, do you recall the size of the tip or a brand? That's all I want, not the whole system. Got to keep the GLW happy as well.

I'll take some measurements and let you know. I don't think there was any brand though.
