Turbocharging an na6

Hi,

Was thinking about turbocharging my NA6 sometime this year. Just would like to know a few things. If I put the kit on will the little NA6 diff be able to handle the power? I have heard mixed reports...some guys reckon they can't and have talked to other turbo na6 owners who still use the original na6 diffs and say they are fine... note that i would not be running more then 6psi on my kit when i got it. Any other factors to consider when turbocharging? I have done basically all suspension and brake work, have a heavy duty exedy clutch and am running a 2.25 exhaust system which should be just enough to handle the turbo im guessing. talked to other na6 owners that are running standard everything with a turbo kit and they say that you don't need to worry about building the engine or diff strong...the original equipment can handle the power (and they have proven this first hand). My next buy will be a full ecu replacement and then a turbo kit, so if anyone could share some information or shed some light onto this topic it would be appreciated and if anyone could give me an insight into the extent of what else if anything needs to be done that would be great. (i dont want to whack on a turbo kit go out have some fun and blow the engine, gearbox or diff to smitherines! ).

thanks in advance
joel

In my experience MX5's at 6psi are not fun. I would rather drive an N/A NA over anything up to (and including) 8psi in an NA anyday.

That aside, the diff should last but it will depend heavily on how you drive it - the more you take it easy the longer it will last.

Exhaust is quite small at 2.25 for a turbo but you are keeping it at 6psi (yea that will last long!!!  ). It will do the job, the job being keeping exhaust gasses out of the cabin, but wont let you see any sort of good power.
The full computer is a little overboard considering your only going for 6pound as the engine can go very well with only a piggyback/s.

The gearbox will handle a good whallop of power but again if you abuse it (like i do) then it wont last all that long.

If i were you i'd seriously try and get your kiester into some turbo MX5 seats so you can experience the power. Try and find a couple of cars, one with only the 6ish psi your after and another with 12psi.
At the 12psi level the car starts to become fun again anything over that will be getting into the \"hell yea i love this shizzit\" catagory

Hope this helps
Dave

An mx with any improvement on power is more fun than the slooooooooow NA n/a. For 6 psi you could just get a piggy back computor like an emanage blue to do the fual and timing..a stand alone ecu is overkill for low boost.

ask Uncle arthur about the rebuild costs... $500-$1000 closer to the $1000 to get it done properly

I had mine done about 18 months ago. It only needed new seals and bearings, and cost approx $750 from MTQ, who by the way I would highly recomend. They only rebuild turbos - nothing else.

Generally you won't get a final price/quote, until the turbo is fully disassembled. It could just need new seals and bearings, or you might find that either of the wheels is damaged, shaft bent, or the housings are damaged etc. Don't pay more than $1k, as you can get a GT25 for not too much more than that, say $1300 new...

I wouldn't even bother rebuilding the T25, as you could buy a better turbo for less than the cost of the rebuild.

Good turbos to look for are the T28's off Nissan S15's (and I think S14's - $5-600), VF10's from Subies, and the T3 hybrids off R33 Skylines ($3-400 - this is what I have on my car).

Considering you can buy a new GT28 for under a grand now (if you know where to look) then that is not really worth it now hey....I know what turbo I will be using :)

6PSI is pretty poor......thats what i am at now. Especially poor if you keep the 1.6 AFM....Man that sucks.....still enough to run a 14 second quarter though i reckon.

All that will change in about a year or so.....at the moment i am focussing on getting the chassis set up before playing with power.
