Ignition Timming - Retarding Stuff .............

If you set your Ignition Timming to 6 degrees, does this shift the whole ignition timming map in the ecu ...... say 4 degrees retarded ? assuming 10 degress is STD.

What does this actually do to the car on the whole?
I've read about people advancing their timing from 10 to 14
Supposedly something about more torque

yes advancing the base timing means you get into the sweet spot of the torque curve earlier. every engine will be different as to how far it can be advanced before pinging becomes a problem, but a general rule of thumb for the NA is 14 degrees. good idea to only run higher octane fuels (95, 98 ) if you do this. stay away from the regular 91 stuff.

you would only retard it , as tasroadster is asking about, if you are fitting a turbo. this prevents the engine from pinging under boost. again, use the best fuel you can.

Yep.....

The Greddy Turbo Kits (which I run) recommend the ignition timing to be set at 6 degrees with stock ECU. It runs without a problem like this and really rips on boost.

Cheapest HP you can buy.......... totally happy :-)))

how does the car run before it gets on boost? is it a bit sluggish wiith the retarded timing? i know this would only be for the first couple 1000 rpm, but just curious.

It runs great, smooth, Idles the same as stock.

Even at 2000 rpm it has more power than std.

Funny thing ......... with the turbo fitted to car is quieter and smoother.
+ a lot more go....

Yep, the turbo acts as a muffler. You can run straight through WITHOUT a muffler and it is only just louder than stock... Very illegal though.

Be carefull with the level of boost you decide to run if ever you decide you want a bit more performance.

The kit recommends pulling 6 degrees and runs 6psi of boost.

If you decide to wind it up to 10psi you'd need to reduce the timing again as appropriate.

IMHO, you could get away with removeing less than 6 degrees on teh stock 6psi... BUT the kit manufacturers need to be safe rather than sorry, besides there's probably less than 10hp in runningthe extra few degrees anyway.

Did you make the releif cuts in the manifold before you installed it? If not, get it off and do it!

i think the more recent greddy kits already have the relief cuts from the factory. or so i've been told.
