A muffler will only add bling and noise, and will have minor benefical effects on backpressure and ultimate power.

It was actually my understanding that the standard rear muffler was quite restrictive?

Pretty sure you understand correctly. A muffler only change on an MX5 has fairly good benefits in comparison to other cars. Heard this from a few people.

from what alot of ppl have been saying the most restrictive muffler is at the back because once the air gets there its not that hot and has un-expanded (dont want to say compressed cause it not really compressing).

Try a free'er flowing cat (like metal cat, others are a waste of time) and maybe a resonator in the middle instead of the muffler (if it has one - never seen a stock system before). Thats if you dont want your exhaust to drone like mad with the cannon on the back. - i know i'm getting over mine, and its turbo so its a nice sound not the n/a drone!!

Read an article in the latest HPI where they tested a cat back after market system and a stock GTR system (on either a GTR or a GTS-T) and found that the stock one made a little bit more power even though it was quieter and smaller diameter just. - not sure on details but its fairly corrrect
