If money is tight look at getting a bottom end off a 323BP turbo, as long as it has good compression it will let you run more boost and should be pretty reliable.

If you can afford to stick lots of nice new bits in then just get a 1.8 bottom end off any 94-2005 MX-5. Try the forum sponsor MX5 Mania.

(speaking of Beechworth, years and years ago one of our family friends started building a stone house on the top of a hill just a short walk out of town. Do you know if it's still there? It looks like the ruins of a tiny castle.)

The later engines have a larger thrust bearing and a mains cap girdle (Oct 00 on). But apart from that, the blocks appear to be virtually identical. Both the above items can be retrofitted as can a set of billet mains caps from Flying Miata which is another good bit of insurance.
