I'm no expert on this stuff, but i think if you use a turbo other than a GT25 etc you will need to fabricate the manifold yourself, as the flanges are different. As to sizes etc you need the experts opinions, but if it was me I'd be following a tried and proven route using readily available bits from AVO or FM.

I'd say it's too small, you would be better off with a factory turbo off a 1.8 or 2l engine, unless your super keen on midrange with no top end to speak of...

TD04 is ok (i'm running a TD04-13C) but a small TD05 would be better.
Or if you've got the cash i'd got for a HKS2530 or 2510.

I think anything that comes off an aftermarket twin turbo kit, like a 300zx or GTR, that has the kind of spooling/top end characteristics would be of an ideal size.

Dave

PS i'm no turbo expert but i've got one  so i know form my experience that a td04 is a small but ok size.

I agree with the above two posts as well. Both those turbos will be too small.

I put an RB25det s2 turbo on my 1.8L mx as I considered this to be the best value for money turbo to suit. It has a ceramic turbine and nylon compressor (only the s2 turbos have this compressor) with ball bearings which means the rotating parts are very light and spin up quickly for a turbo of its size. I run about 14psi and it spools up very low in the rev range with boost coming on almost immediately. Full boost is by about 4000rpm. I highly recommend this turbo. One note though these turbos don't like high boost and it's normally unwise to run them on above 1bar as the ceramic turbine has a tendency to fall off... You could probably get away with a few more psi on an mx engine as it is smaller than the 2.5L skyline engines.

I personally can't see the point in spending much cash on a new turbo with a relatively inexpensive car like an NA mx5. Second hand is the way to go and there are plenty of good stock turbos around from engines in the 2-2.5L range.

Both and VF14 and VF13 are going to be too small. TD04 off a WRX is going to be a good size and could be had for the same dollars as warpspeed is talking about for a RB20 turbo. WRX's run attrocious manifolds for turbo lag when you look at it and they seem to work alright on them. With the size difference you can get in exhaust manifold size with an inline 4 compared to a flat 4 set out like WRXs you'll easily be able to get a good power producing engine for minimal lag. Also allows you to upgrade to the VF2-3 series for minimal outlay at a later date if you desire.

I agree that both of those turbos from a legacy twin turbo will be too small if used singularly, as when on full boost it doesnt switch from one turbo to another, but merely ADDS the second bigger turbo, so BOTH turbos are supplying the air to the engine..the smaller turbo has proven to very unreliable and are hard to get as many many people are looking for them for thier legacy's. id look for a WRX turbo or the VF10 from the earlier single turbo GT Legacy..(you can buy a VF10 for LESS than what you could sell that small twin turbo turbo for!) win win!

Yeah the VF10 (RS Liberty/ GT Legacy turbo) seem to be equivalent and go for next to nothing (call a wrecker a c*nt and he'll throw one at you prices). TD04L's go for more but then it's also a newer turbo so should be in better condition.

Yeah the TDO4L is actually a smaller turbo than the VF10 but its design means it is still very efficient at high boost levels (15psi) compared to the VF10 which is happier at shifting the same volume of air but at lower boost.

Ive thought about getting a TD04 and bolting it on to see the difference between the two in real world conditions.
