Just picked up my rebuilt mazdaspeed diff today - not realising that it was missing the half shafts out of the diff for the axles to bolt to.....

How hard is it to source/remove shafts from a diff, and to reinstall them in the new one?

Can they be taken from my existing 1.6 diff, or better off bought?

Does anyone out there have a set of diff shafts for a 1.6 that they no longer need/want/use???

removing the half shafts from the diff itself is a piece of cake.

I place a big scrwedriver fron the inside direction to the outside direction. & whack it like hell. Should just fall out.

1.6 will fit another 1.6........but aren't you converting to 1.8?
in which case I'm not 100% sure.

but if you're staying with the 1.6......use the old ones.

1.6 will not always fit another 1.6 - the half shafts differ at the differential end between the LSD and non-LSD versions.

You will need to find out which version the Mazdaspeed diff is built for and ensure that you have the right ones.

If converting to the 1.8 diff, you will need axles and drive shaft. The physically bigger diff requires smaller shafts in order to fit.

That said, there is no need to go the 1.8 diff if youcan get a quality LSD. The 1.8 Torsen diff is simply cheaper than a KAZZ, Cusco, ATS, MazdaSpeed or similar, it is not necessarily better.

My 1.6 diff broke badly in the centre carrier section, bits of cast iron everywhere. Fortunately I was rolling to a stop at the time. If I had been doing 80+, I think the ring gear/pinion would have shredded. As it is, they are in very good condition.



I was offered a very good price on an ATS clutchpack 1.5way diff in the 1.6 housing. It rocks!

Are you interested in parting company with them and for what sort of price/trade/deal?

I also have some 1.6L half shafts lying around. I know for a fact they will fit that diff. Dunno what they are worth though.
