Hello Redeye... Do you have a copy of the Mazda MX-5 Owner's Manual ? Info. on the operation of the automatic is on page 4 -6. Instruction re. ' Hold Mode ' is on page 4-9. But in case you don't have this book ... The little round button on the shiftlever is not an overdrive switch. It is the ' HOLD ' switch. The ' HOLD ' operates on 3rd ( D ), 2nd (S ) and 1st ( L ). But not on 4th. 4th is an overdrive gear ( o. 730 ) but the ' HOLD ' doesn't operate on 4th. gear. Hope this helps. Why your speedo. isn't working is a mystery. Cheers, slowpoke

Redeye... A Post Script.. I meant to add that to enable your (automatic ) gearbox to select 4th gear ( the o'd gear ) the HOLD Mode must be switched ' OFF. ' The HOLD light (on your dashboard ) will then NOT be illuminated. I hope that I'm making sense to you.?? It's all quite easy when you read the Mazda Manual. I feel sure that your gearbox is fine. Invariably anyone who is NOT familiar with the MX5 NB8A automatic assumes that the HOLD button is an overdrive button.. but it is NOT. slowpoke

Well Slowpoke, I am sure that is a great help for redeye but all I can say is that I am glad I don't have an auto. I could not work all of that out.
Give me that floor change in an MX5 any day - I can handle that 8)
