Cams are here!! They go in tomorrow!!!

Postby Sheck » Thu Sep 28, 2006 7:15 pm

Hey guys, just letting you know my cams have arrived!!! Hurray!!! I'm extatic!!!
They go in tomorrow after work, just hope the local Mazda dealer has a timing belt and camshaft seals on hand cause if they dont then i'll have to pull off the covers twice, cause theres no way i'm not installing these beauties!!!!! mmmwwaaahhahahahahah

They are HKS 264 deg with 8.74mm of lift, got them second hand from Japan off an engine that was making 359.6ps at the wheels off 20psi of boost on a pulsar GTI-R turbo and a HKS cast manifold.!!!! Oh and it was bored out to 1.724L

Hard to belive the figures but he has broken 3 PPF frames and a number of gearboxes - now on an OS Ginken box. He wants more power so he's going to an SR20 swap! Aiming for 500hp reliable!!!!!

I'll post up some pics and hopefully some sound clips of my progress tomorrow!!!

Dave

i'm looking forwards to seeing the pics and any video.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Was the original car an MX, or a GTi-R?

cos the GTi-R has an SR-20...

I must not be reading your post correctly...

Best of luck though!

I think he means that it was an MX5 which had a GTiR turbo adapted to it. After all, a SR20 turbo is just a Garrett T28.

Is that an older cam? I thought the HKS 264s were >9mm lift?

Let us know how you go. What management are you running?

Not necessarily but I'm sure you know that. Though the GTiR is just a big GT28 (can't remember the exact code though).

The gti-r turbo was the biggest T28 \"factory\" fitted to the SR20, but there not ball bearing compaired to a late model Jap s15 silvia ball bearing T28 :) Aussies get ripped off with non ball bearing t28 versions from factory...sucks!

not sure what the cams were designed for (NA or turbs) but they did come off a turboed MX5.

These cams are 3 years old so yea tey are an older model cam.

These have been fitted - only just finished :? initialy the car wouldnt run - all the markings lined up perfectly but i decided to move the intake came one tooth to the left when looking at it front on. This made it look worse but th ecar actually ran!!! hurray.

Idle is not lumpy at all, but it does have a really nice burble to it now. As for power wise i havent tuned anything yet and i went for a spin. Basically its dumping wayy too much fuel which is robbing heaps of power! I'll try do a quick tune tomorrow before PARKLIFE and i'll really hack into it on sunday.

I only got like two pictures and a before film clip to get the sound difference. I'll get a few more clips pre and post tune over the weekend and post them up.

Fingers crossed it will all come together in the end!!

Oh it had more torque down low and made boost very early. I really need a better cat cause my current one is causeing a descent siized boost spike. - goes up to 13-14 then back down to 11-12. i guess that kinda small but it shouldnt be that big  .

Updaes to come, stay tuned!!!!

Dave

PS i'm running an EManage - all the car's specs can be found in my sig :P

Basically got a greddy turbo kit, home made 2.5\" exhaust, 330cc injectors, Emanage, trust IC, 1.8 diff with mechanical LSD, 6speed box. Stock internals, about 12psi boost.

Ok installed the cams friday nite. The cam swap was simple engough, then the new timing belt went on along with new cam seals. Everything was lined up perfectly so everything goes back on and i try cranking it over for the first time.

She starts!!! but she doesnt like it  the thing was runnning really badly had a play with the CAS to see if the timing was out, find it ran a little better with more advance but still really badly.

OK must of stuffed the timing belt up. So off come the covers again only to find that yes everything is perfectly lined up - weird.
I look at eh cam gears and notice that the intake side is off by maybe 1mm (ie the top spoke is to th eright when looking at if from th efront).
So i fugure it cant hurt to see if moving the intake cam gear one tooth to the left (towards the intake manifold). I do this but now it looks really off - by about 6mm-1cm, i do a couple of hand turns to check that nothing binds up inside then put the covers back on and crank it over.

She runs!!! And she likes it!!!! ahhahah weirdest thing - it looked wayy off but ran beautifully.
Anyways i take it for a quick run before bed (it was 11pm by the time i packed everything up in the garage) and it felt ok - more bottom end plus boost comming on earlier but once up higher in the revs (past 3grand) with some more boost the thing just felt sluggish. It was dumping wayy too much fuel.

The next morning (sat, just before parklife) dad suggests i check the timing. Had a look and the thing was on 0 BTDC!!!!! so i move it back to 12deg and then i lean the fuel out quite a bit which got it running very nicely. Stuck the wideband up the bum of it and checked out the ratios which told me it was a little lean when comming onto boost and hovering at 0 boost/vac so i richened this part up and got some really nice numbers right through the range.

Before the cams i would get a hit of power at about 4k rpm even though the boost was comming on earlier. Now the boost comes on even earlier and there is no hit. Instead it is really smooth and just keeps pulling right up to the limiter. Only thing that would make it better would be a professional tune (ie put some timing back into it, which i could do if i had a knock amp) and possibly some cam gears to play around with the torque curve a little. Oh and more importantly to find out what kind of power i'm laying down!!

I'll post a couple of pics and hopefully a couple of clips later today.

Dave

PS its not lumpy on idle but has a really nice burble and is a few dB louder
