Boag's - don't worry too much - if it turns out I don't need I'll let you know........
As for how - it's easy, but I've still got the dirt under my fingernails to prove I did it.... you can do the same thing with your AFM and intake plenum - I sanded it first (by hand) starting with about a 150 grid emery paper - I also tried a similar grade glass paper but it wears out faster. The sanding is to remove the casting marks - there are still some pockmarks etc that I want to get out, so I'll give it a bit more of a go.
As the emery paper wore down, I put some polishing compound onto it, so it becomes a finer grain sanding surface, which takes out the sanding marks.
Finally, I hit it with straight cutting/polishing compound - basically any cheap cut/polish will do and polished it by hand until I got the result here.
It takes a while, so don't be disillusioned if it doesn't get shiny straight away - the casting marks and edges take a bit of effort, but when you start to polish at the end, it literally goes from yuk to bling in a second.

'Brasso' works great on aluminium. You can get it to go like chrome with a mirror finish. I'll bring some Saturday.

May tarnish pretty quick though

Autosol works really well, but as fig said, it tarnishes quickly. Ideally you'll want to coat with something after polishing.

Nothing a bit of black dye won't fix where it is fading.
