Postby Astroboysoup » Wed Aug 23, 2006 11:57 am

Well, while I been pulling my car and engine apart cleaning other bits and pieces, I thought id give the alternator a good clean.

I just used a wire brush and some degreaser on mine.

It's by no means shiny, but that certainly got the grease off of it.

nah seriously,

when i bought the car it came with unshielded earthing wires all over the engine bay but weren't wired up anywhere.

Is the alternator earth point on of those places where I can plug the earth wire back in to? I'm assuming so... but if so... is having a unshielded earthing wire running a risk at getting an electric shock?

Need to be carfull using degreaser on the alternator.
Maybe use a rag soaked in degreaser to wipe it clean then wipe off the deagreaser with a wet rag.

DON'T spray degreaser all over it then hose it off

I learnt from experience many years ago.

If the degreaser finds its way into the bearings you will be removing the alternator again soon the replace the bearings
