clutch master replacement - repco part made in japan

hi all,

I am just changing my clutch master cylinder and noticed the part I got from repco is almost completely identical to the one I am replacing. Now obviously this suggests that the clutch master has been changed before with a non genuine part... but the bag that the new one came in does have a label that says 'made in japan'.

So I ask that someone with a genuine mazda clutch master could give me some details about markings etc. to see if it is the same part as what mazda supplies.

markings on the plastic bottle are -

funny cirlcle thing and MAX to the right of it.

theres a line and below that, SHIN-EI MIN

all that is the same on both.

on the firewall side -

old - 1 x 1 5

new - 5y16


on the metal part there is a code

old - x p 3 (circle thing)

new - x h 2 (circle thing)

stamped into the face that bolts onto firewall (ie you can't see unless off of car) -

old - J Y

new - L H

the caps for both are identical and say -

WARNING , CLEAN FILLER CAP BEFORE REMOVING , USE ONLY DOT 3 FLUID FROM A SEALED CONTAINER .

and it has - WARNING - in the middle section.

that botton photo shows the circlip on the end that rusted on my car causing clutch problems.

not an expert, but wouldn't the seal stop sealing (as in my case) and let clutch fluid past into the cabin... which would probably also rust the circlip (i'm saying it's an effect not a cause).

I thought it was just my clutch slave that needed replacing, until i drove my car last week with no shoes... and noticed the carpet to be damp and greasy. I pulled the carpet back and theres no paint stripped fortunately.

hey thanks. I don't see him mention if the master cylinder he was rebuilding was a genuine part or not... but the markings on the plastic part were the same.

That's actually my site and my article. It's the factory one being rebuilt with aftermarket seals.

oh and btw... i just changed my master and slave cylinder and my gearbox changes much nicer (makes sense doesn't it?).

I've neglected the mx5 since i bought it in january this year (too busy with ae86). But after fixing a few annoying things, the passion to drive the mx is back. can't wait until summer!

hey good article by the way. have you got any pics with markings on the main black bit? or maybe could someone open their bonnet and have a look?

if so getting a master from repco for $90 (trade) thats made in japan is lots better than getting one from mazda for $300+.
