AHHHHHHHHH. Carby problems (Evidently it's not my 5)

Bastard of a thing is driving me nuts. I have a twin stromberg 150 setup on a 930cc 4 cyl Hillman IMP. It is not cooperating with me at the moment...

One of the carbs is auto choke, the other manual(try finding new(old stock) 30 year old carbies, you take what you can get). Engine only starts with full choke on the manual. Once it's really warm, the autochoke carb is fine, the other is still dodgey, and requires at least 1/2 choke. If you rev and let the choke off, those cylinders start dying.

This leads me to think that this carb isn't getting enough fuel, but it is in the same fuel line as the other carb... Both needles are all the way out, if anything it should be running rich.

/end rant/

Any ideas, pleeeeeeeeeeeeeease help.

im pulling appart my dads old merc at the moment.. dear god old carbs are rediculas!!

all i wanted to do was remove the crack exhaust manifold... but not being a cross flow head.. and being german  means i have to remove the inlet side of things too get off the outlet side of things  wouldnt be too bad if they didnt put the nuts and bolts in places spanners dont fit :x
(sorry i needed a rant too :P )

have you tried flushing out all the ports and jets etc.. no poo in there?

if you do find out what the problem is please post it up here... i might need some similar advice once i put this thing back together :?

Boags,

I am restoring a Bond 875 (3 wheel beastie with a Hillman Imp engine and transaxle), and Speedy Spares have all of the bits you will ever need for an Imp.

Oh, don't you worry about that  Half the car came from the UK starting from about 4 years ago, we have been gradually hoarding...

I think we will have a speedy spares sticker on the car, along with malcom anderson's shop, corley conversions, and countless others.

I'm not sure what to do about these bloody carbs though :( Might find a single carb manifold and run that till the rest of the car is sorted...

aaaah..........twin stromies...........the memories................geoff, convert the auto choke carbie over to manual choke for a start, poor little engine is getting one fuel/air mixture on two cylinders & completely different air/fuel on the other two.........very confusing, & IIRC, the auto choke strombergs had different size jets in them...........if i really stretched my memory, i could tune 'em for ya......LOL..........many, MANY tortuous hours keeping a pair in perfect tune on a holden 6 taught me a lot..............supa glue was my biggest discovery, got 'em perfectly tuned & plonked a dob of supa glue on the mixture & idle screws, a WALLAH, no more out of sync strombergs

immediate suggestions: convert them to a twin manual choke setup, check ALL the jet sizes, check your idle screws are in EXACTLY the same place adjustment wise, check that BOTH the float levels are right & exactly the same.......that'll get ya started.......

Well, that won't help, I turn something that looks good and handles well(where have i heard that before??) into a bucket of bolts that handles like a barrow full of sloppy pigsh!t  and an ugly bucket at that, but i've still got carbies. (Not to mention front wheel drive  )

You have to put a turbo on those things just to get them rolling

AJ - I have been corrected by he who knows all, and it seems the auto choke is in fact a no choke at all... Better have a look for a choke then eh?

Thanks for the suggestions though.

Boags - Go the mighty IMP (down with minis, a rusty death to them all  )

cheers

shouldn't be too hard.......again IIRC, the butterfly mechanism is the same on both auto & manual choke once you remove the auto choke mechanism 8)

US Spitfires came with stromberg 150's so maybe try a Triumph specialist. Midgets had them aswell so MG mechs might know of some aswell.

Could possibly try the Strombergs off a mk1 Triumph 2000, I dont think they're 150's but they shouldnt be toooo much bigger

Strombergs are a pain on any car, and rarely produce good power gains. I would make up a manifold and run either a single 40mm DCOE Weber, or a pair of 1 1/4\" SUs off a mini. Either are infinitely and easily tuned to suit whatever state your engine is in. The Imp engine is a gem for tuning and can deliver serious HP (relatively speaking). And before you all chime in with whinges about SU tuning - I run three 13/4\" Sus on the Buchanan with zero problems and very little maintenance required. All you need is a good idea of what needles to start with (and there are good lists around - I think I have one on an old floppy disc(!) somewhere. A dyno for initial setup makes the job really easy. A weber will deliver even better results, but cost a bit more to start with.
