*CHEAP* DIY Cold Air Intakes - Options for the NA

OK.. finally had a GOOD look at my engine bay and realised that there is a whole lot LESS room than I thought was there for a U-bend style cold-side intake (Ala Bevan, but he has an NB)
I also have the RX7 AFM (bigger) to deal with, along with a massive pod filter... perhaps I'll have to sit with a smaller one as the current setup is very big
Dont want to fork out for a Mania intake, cant justify spending $600+ on an intake

2 suggestions, 1 fairly basic, the second farily basic if you can solder.
1 - Remove the L shaped elbow of factory piping that runs across the front of the system and turbo around the passenger side of the engine.
Replace it with a straighter or more flexible piece of pipe so you can run the filter right up behind the headlight - away from the nasty exhaust heat.
2 - Extend teh AFM wiring loom and relocate teh AFM on teh intake side, use same bendy pipe as described above to run a super short intake fron TB, facing downwards towards teh splash guard and mount the AFM and filter down ther - Kind of like slammer's set up if you've ever seen it?

Follow Sean's instructions for lengthening the cable to the AFM so you can move it away from the headers, then;
See if you can sort out some kind of hose that connects from one (or both) of the great big air inlets in the nose and direct the hose up into your engine bay. Get some dunny pipe wide enough to enclose your pod filter, join it up to your hose from the front and you'll have a custom cheap-assed CAI.
Correct.... I'll have to do alot of planning tho0ugh as I'm a bit of a dumbass when it comes to practical things

That or just spend the $290 to have the mania CAI fitted...where did u pull $600 from, or does that include the enlarged piping?

I reckon a large bendy hose pool-cleaner style could work once you extend the AFM loom. Then you can find some room in the nose cone or right up front of hotside for that Hugh Jass pod of yours.

The enlarged intake sure looks the goods...
Can anyone confirm if it actually increases anything?
Only ask as i have heard alot about the chamber in the intake being there to increase or smoothe out the torque curve or something like that..

I'll be prepping the corolla on saturday Max...

Steve 818 wrote:Post it next to Dave's so we can see the difference between your car with the Mania CAI & steel pipe thingy combined with your Jackson Racing extractors and SP exhaust.
Then we could see the results from Daves car with the rebuilt engine that still isn't fully run in with the factory airbox and intake, and with the factory headers and factory option exhaust.
Then you could post up Sab's dyno graph with his 1.8 having pretty much the same setup as yours and with the results a huge 3 rwkw more then my old 1.6 which had 200,000 k behind it.
Compelling results.

Steve my car has a Blingtake CAI Intake, it made more power than the stock NBs at our dyno day.
