Top of block, rear, intake side. You'll need a bright light and something to clean the area to find the stamping.

Look harder. There will be a flat deck on the rear of the block. The number is not stamped very deeply. Clean the area and get a very bright light. You may need to rub chalk on the flat area to help highlight the number.
Check the other (exhaust) side if you think it may be a BP engine.

Follow the rear engine hook down and look for any flat planes. Get a rag and start rubbing where the flat plane is. The engine number should be there.

Come along to the club run this Sunday. There will be more than enough people there to hlep you find the engine number. By the way that number on the intake manifold is more than likely a part number and I believe that the piece of paper is as well.

It could be. Clean the dirt off it and see!
