when you say \"couldnt crank\" do you mean that there was absolutly no power? not even power to turn lights on?
if so ide suggest looking at the battery terminals and there connections.
engine dies and hard to crank

Dose the engine sort of slow down and then stop like pulling up at the light with out using the clutch?
How many K's has it done?
when it dose stop and you try to crank is the engine turning over slowly?

hmm well easiest way to think of it is...
you basically need 3 things for the engine to run.
Fuel (so maybe theres no pressure in the rail. dont know if it would work but when it happens, dissconect a fuel line and see if theres pressure there, might be a better way but i dunno.
Air So it could be to do with, TPS, AFM.
Spark Coils, Leads, Plugs.
Maybe someone can add to that if im missing things...
But basically try to narrow it down first.

Where abouts are you Iam. If you're anywhere near one of the club and forum supporters like MX5 Mania etc then it would be quicker and simpler to get them to have a look for you and diagnose the problem. Most of the specialist shops will put their finger on the cause without you going through an extensive trial and error process.
