pain in the ass to get off... even more of a pain to get it on!!!

To get it off just use a flathead a rip it to shreds!!!
To get it on... well my mechanic did that but i think he used a 36mm or round there socket and hit it with a hammer to get it in evenly.
I think the main think to remember is to not do one side at a time and keep the seal flat against the opening(where it goes).

hope that helps.

If you choose to use a screwdriver, wrap it in a rag, and be very gentle. It is very easy to slip and score the crank, and then you'll be up a certain creek...

Another way to get it out is by drilling a hole, putting in a screw, and pulling on that.

Getting it in - oil it up and push it as far as you can. On my 92 it went most of the way in.

Tips...
if you are anywhere near 100 000 kms then do the timing belt.
if you are anywhere near 200 000 kms then also do the water pump.

I have seen one go at 205 and heard of a few others that have gone within a year or so of the 200 000 km service. Even if it ain't leaking it is a good idea to do it while you have the timing gear in pieces, it's only $150 from Mazda.

My water pump died a little after 100k, but having rusty water in the system instead of of coolant probably didn't help 8).

Still, change the pump whenever you change the belt, and vice-versa. It'll save you many headaches and $$$ in the long term.

While you are at it, it's adviseable (if you can afford it) to replace the waterpump and timing belt incl. tensioners.

Front seal installer by 'Flyinmiata' un the US should help install the front seal easier:
