after reading a new thread on miata net about oil that smells like petrol possibly caused by a leaking injector, i got paranoid & checked mine. seems to be the same problem didn't notice it much from smelling the dipstick but smelling under the oil cap i think there is some petrol in there..

so what are some other ways to tell & how much are injectors? & an average cost to have a mechanic put them in..

hrmm, another thing to add to the list of maintenance.

bloody hell, you must have a good nose on you zoombie ..........considering that the petrol you pour in your tank is a refined derivative of what you pour in your sump.....i would be VERY surprised if anyone could tell just by sticking their honk in the oil filler hole & snorting mate.........don't worry about it

hrm, could be paranoia but then again, Mobil 1 does have it's own smell compared to the petrol smell at the filler cap..

have a look at the actual injectors and see if they are visibly leaking at the inlet manifold if it is damp then clean it and re-inspect after you drive it a good distance, if it appears wet and is smell on the injector base they they are probly leaking. When replacing injectors your usually do all 4 as if you do 1 another one might leak soon after and you will have to pay the labour again.

how is the fuel consuption? blow smoke from being to rich?

anyway injectors are easy to change and you could do it yourself if you are mechanically minded. Cant remember the exact way to do it but it aint hard.

I only noticed mine blew smoke the other night when someone was behind me when I planted it. Not noticable from my view during the day though. What's the cause of running too rich? (Import running on premium unleaded). Other than that, runs like a dream!

Undo a couple of bolts holding the fuel rail on then lift the injectors out and replace with new ones, then reinstall the fuel rail.

Should take about 15 minutes to do all four.

well fuel usage does seem to more then it used to. the 02 sensor has been needing replacement for a long time & there is black smoke under heavy throttle booting. astro suggest possibly the cat convertor might need replacing.

how much do the injectors cost? i spose getting used isn't a good idea & the miata net thread says fuel pressure regulator could also be the cause..

i'm ordering other things from MX5Mania, new o2 sensor and a cas oil seal. install next weekend & do the 14deg bump so that might solve the problem if it's not the injectors?..

well yeh putting in new injectors doesn't seem to be the most difficult thing, been looking through the servicing manual supplement from mazda, it's not really made for the average person with not much idea.

the injectors don't need anything else to install do they? like gaskets?

If you are worried, take off the fuel rail and injectors, and get them pressure checked and the tips and o-rings replaced. It costs about $10-15 per injector. I always keep a set of o-rings handy so I can change them every time I pull the injectors out. I have found that they leak often if removed and replaced without new o-rings. Lubricate them with some oil which helps them seal when you replace them.

one of my injectors is really pushing out alot of fuel, has it had it or can an injector spec fix them.
