Which Diff to go with 6 Speed?

Postby Roderic » Fri May 05, 2006 2:57 pm

Hey Guys,

Just wondering your opinions o Torsen 1.8 Diffs?
Basically going down the path of a 1.8L in my NA6 (since its crank fell off).
I'm going to put a 6-Speed box into it, and wondering which Torsen would be better the 3.636 or 3.9?
Going to be more of a general driver than a race car.

Thanks all
Rod.

Up to you, really, but if it'll help here's a comparison between the 3.6 and 3.9.

Maximum Speed in Gears @ 7000rpm

3.6 3.9
1st 58 54
2nd 95 89
3rd 131 123
4th 172 160
5th 216 202
6th 257 239

RPM at: 50 KM/H

3.6 3.9
1st 6,085 6,526
2nd 3,672 3,938
3rd 2,662 2,855
4th 2,034 2,182
5th 1,618 1,736
6th 1,364 1,463

I have now run 3.6, 3.9 and 4.1 with my 6 speed.

The 3.6 is a bit too high geared even though it is the standard ratio.

I found the 3.9 to be a good road ratio.

The 4.1 gives better acceleration but 5th gear runs out at about 180kph and so you have to use 6th at high speed circuits. The car will not accelerate well in 6th. This is really only a problem for turbo cars as NA cars struggle to go that fast anyway.

Cheers

Brian
