Noise in NA6 gearbox, any suggestions ????

Postby michael » Mon Apr 10, 2006 8:16 pm

Hi all,

I have a low mileage (80,000 k's) well looked after NA 6, which has developed a coarse vibration noise which seems to be coming through the gear stick when decelerating using engine resistance. It seems to make the noise in all forward gears. It does not sound like gear noise and the gear box is quiet when accelerating and driving through the gears.

Anyone know what this might be.

Hope someone can help.

Thanks
Michael

Hey mate:

Let me guess.. Vibrates between 4000-3500 ish?? I would say that there is a 95% chance it is one of these two things:

1. Head shielding around the header has come loose and is vibrating

Hose clamp it all up (There's a secondary one below the big one, check it out!)

I've tryed removing all of the heat shielding down the entire exhaust, still got the same vibration/
2. Throwout bearing

Drop the box and replace it.

Thanks maxwolfie,

The noise occurs from much lower revs (on engine resistance) than 3500 - 4000 rpm and with the clutch not engaged the throw out bearing should not be spinning should it? It is more of a coarse vibration than the squeal that I think tends to occur with a throw out bearing

if you 'load' the clutch by putting pressure on it but not disengaing the engine, does it vibrate? If not then your throwout bearing maybe on its way out and causing theis vibration...
or
it may be your universal joints on your tailshaft if theres vibration
Huh?

Don't rule out the possibility of the noise being from the diff! 1.6 diffs can get very noisy!

I have a similar noise, and it is the... wait for it.... springs on the clutch plate!!!!!! Well thats what it is on mine anyway.

I replaced the clutch and the noise was gone for about 15,000K's but has re appeared! both times it was a daiken kit.
Cheers, Rob

Thanks for your advice,

I forgot that the car did have a new clutch kit put in it less than 10,000 k ago and it was a Daiken kit. I'll be pretty peeved if that's the problem given that the car is dríven very sparingly.

To best describe the noise I am talking about, it is like the vibrating noise when a metal threaded gear knob is loose on the gear stick. There is no vibration in the car itself.

Any other suggestions before I start taking out gearboxes etc.

Regards
Michael

Try the easy and inexpensive things first :) i.e. heat shields, other loose things in the engine bay etc.
