SP or SE

I am starting to look (dream) about upgrading to a factory turbo mx5 to replace my NA6A. Now I know this has been covered before but I can't find the thread.

So I am interested to find out which has the best potential for quick track times. I know the SP 150kw standard vs SE 140ish kw with mania/sp motorsport kit on it is close, but has the SE got more potential for more oomph and better handling....At the moment, SP around $30K to $35K, SE $35K onwards...

Fire away!!!

We'll soon see - my SE turns up in the next couple of days. Development should make some interesting reading :) The SP and SE are really very similar and I doubt that at similar power levels, they would perform any differently at all. BTW, the SE, NB8B/C and SP all have exactly the same brakes on them. I recall someone thinking they are different - they are not. I think the SE has one extra underbody brace on it too apart from the turbo/manifold/gearbox/diff differences. :)

I believe it was me who thought the brakes were bigger on the SE....but a kind SP driver set me straight.

I didn't get in the argument on the other thread, but my summary is:

SP:
significantly more go and uses the full revs range from 2000 to 7400rpm.
More driveable with boost available anytime.
Lacks LSD but that is about $800 upgrade.
Can be upgraded for even more umph by a number of methods.
Much quicker on the track.
Can do with a spring/shock upgrade (espeacially after about 40K)

SE
Nicer body kit
LSD standard
Bilsteins standard (However can be too harsh on rough roads)
Engine only on boost from 3500 and runs out of puff compared to SP

Upgrades
SP Motorsport offers an upgrade for both cars. SE more expensive with end result is SP like performance. SP result - absolute weapon.

Summary
SE is a great car. Add a LSD to SP and it is an awesome car.

Cheers

Brian

SP...Stock Standard MX5 with huge turbo and a chrome fuel cap.

SE...
-Mazdaspeed Springs
-Mazdaspeed Sway Bars
-Bilstien Shocks(not harsh on rough roads, actually very well set up)
-Torsen Diff
-Body Kit
-Racing hart 17x7 wheels
-Alloy Pedals
-Special trim and Dash
-6 Stack CD and 6 speaker Stereo
-Strenghtened Gearbox.
and more...

Boost actually comes in at about 2500rpm.

SE is the whole package,SP is a drag car(if you fit the LSD)

(tipped the can of worms on to the ground)

This gets really old...

I bought the SE as I believe it's a better package. I've been through it a million times my rationale as to why it's a better package, just check the other threads.

I say this should be locked and re-directed to the old thread.

What PT said. Everything about the SE/SP comparison has been said several times before in other threads. *yawn* Buy what works best for you.

it would be great to list all the pros & conns about each. without getting real personal about it. some real qualety discussion & put it up in a sticky for new people to read & make up thier own minds.

This subject is such a C.O.W. but newbies just don't know. Thats why they ask.

at the end of the day its what works for the individual in thier own particular situation.

I'd have either of them if someone decided to give me one.....but in reality i'd have real, tough decsision if someone said one or the other.
I'd hate to imagine what a person thats actually spending the money must be going through.

my 0.11c incl. GST.

had the option of either, chose the SP on price and rareity. Don't regret it. Won't sell it. $1100 Guru diff solves most of the issues, some better shocks and springs will deal with the rest :)
