Quick Shifter Kit

Postby Hammer » Fri Feb 17, 2006 10:09 pm

Hi guys

Has anyone fitted a quick shifter kit on their gearbox? In particular for the 6-speed NB8B? All opinion welcome.

If you thought the standard MX-5 gearchange was great, this quickshifter makes it even more delightful. Greatly reduce the gear change "throw" and improves shift feel.

G ' day Hammer... Russell of Carco fame, in Canberra, supplied and fitted a quick shift to my 5 spd. and it improved the ' feel ' of the gearchange considerably. Slightly stiffer yes, but hugely better. Personally, I don't think the addition of a Q / S to a 6 spd. would be either helpfull or rewarding. Cheers, slowpoke

I got a short shifter installed for my NA6 just 2 weeks ago from MX5 Mania. Man...the throw reduction is awesome. Like it says on their website...if you thought the standard throw was good you should feel the short shifter. Definately back this mod up 100% it is awesome. Duno about the 6 speed but the 5 speed is great. Its also worth replacing the rubber shift boots while you are down their as well.

Hammer: There's some info on the six speed short shifters that I posted here which you might find interesting ...

Russellb: Does that ebay short shift kit fit the six speeds as well?

thanks

I got the IL motorsport quick shifter kit, works a wonder shift so short..... makes you want to drive harder lol.....

though the first week after install its a bit stiff.... but once you pop its cherry, you enjoy shifting gears so much more

They require a small modification but they can be fitted

I've had the ILS short shifter on my SP for about 2 years now, and It's fantastic!

When we meet up again Hammer, I'll give you a drive of my car and then you can really tell what it feels like.
If they are installed properly, and I got Dave from MX5 Mania to fit mine, they work so smoothly. They are a little stiff when brand new, but after a week of driving, they loosen up and the effort required is hardly more than with the standard shifter, but boy, the movement between gears is amazingly short. Almost like a switch.
It gives a really good mechanical feel to the shifter, unlike the woolly and rubbery feel the NC has.
