Some people go to the MX5 6 speed which is a straight swap or the RX7 5 speed which needs a lot of mods to fit.
NC Roadie, NC Racey, ND Racey….and a 30AE

Plus several others in the bone yard...

Isn't the standard box pretty tough anyway?

RX7 turbo box is the way i am going, I think there are too many unanswered questions on the 6 speed from what is said on the big forum. The 5 speed has been proven to be strong and is cheap to buy.

The big hurdle on the RX7 coversion is an adaptor plate, tried a few times to get it from guys on the big forum even offering $ but they were not so helpfull despite about 20 people on the post wanting it also. They came up with all sorts of lame exuses of why they could nt supply the dimensions as a file or template. One guy said there adapters had slight fittment problems and they claimed would not match every MX5 engine and box.

A couple of us over here are getting one made up to exact dimensions which will perfectly match and be of a production quality but its still work in progress.

just a thought....

the 6 speeds have been coping very well with the SP's...Its a straight swap.
Its also seems to be coping well with BJ's silver bullet
what makes it so uncertiain for you?

I heard the NA 5 speed breaks in third gear when it does break.

The box is for the turbo turbo II in the states, series 5 over here I think a a mates already got the box and spare engine to get adaptor plate made, its been tested in Mx5's in US that run 10's and no probs, spent hours reading on the big forum. The 6 speeds have been known to break in the RX8 and 200SX(same internals as MX5 6 speed) so its definatly not as good a warranty as the proven RX7 turbo box.

I want a box that will never let me down, and is proven beyond any doubt.
I wont be running more than 200RWKW and would prefer to overbuild things and not have a worry in the back of my mind that I will need to be towed home oneday if I hack around Wakefield.

Verne I,ll post on here when any thing is concrete about the gear box conversion.

Cheers

PPG were the guys as far as I knew. Brian has their gearset in his race car. Apart from that, maybe OS Giken does a set or maybe even Mazdaspeed???

PAR can make mx5 gearsets. (precision Automated Robotics)

You don't need to buy all 1-5 either.

Probably worth looking at what is breaking in teh box, are you breaking gears themselves or are you twisting teh casing and cracking it which is inturn breaking teh gears?
When results speak for themselves - don't interrupt.

Yes my Dogbox is a PPG gearset in a MX5 box. The gears are much meatier and have stood up exceptionally well in my race car.

My dogbox is for sale as well. Asking $5,000 which is pretty good considering the gearset is $6600 from PPG.

Cheers

Are you the Vern Johnson who used to live at Mt Gravatt Brisbane and had a yellow Lotus Elan?
