But why would anyone want to replicate a Countach of all things... Urraco sure but the Countach is bulky, impractical and so over the top!

Precisely!!!

I've also seen 250 GTO replicas with rubbish V6 cars hidden underneath. It's all about the looks with those things. Each to their own. 8)

It's not really an ADR, it ties in to the National Code of Practice for Vehicle modifications.

Basically it's vehicle weight x 4 for vehicles between 800 - 1100kg = Max cc's
For vehicles greater than 1100 it's vehicle weight x 5

Hey mate,

By reading this thread im assuming you like the feel of the mx5 but you want to hold your own with a bit of a sleeper at the lights and maybe a run at an off street drag meet or two.

It also seems you want 500 hp because perhaps you figure you want a car faster than a V8 and you have been in a 300kw commodore or similar?

If im on the right track consider this, you havent thought about power to weight.

I recently drove a brand new Porsche 911 turbo. faster acceleration than any ferrari or lambo ever available in australia. to 100kph in just 3.3 seconds. To 200 in 11 seconds. It has 550hp but weighs a fraction over 1500kg, for a total power to weight of 222kw/tonne.

A 220rwhp mx5 can be easily built for under ten grand and lets consider its power to weight.
Some light stripping (No power steer, and all boot interior stripped as a start) and we are at almost 900kg.
220rwhp is about 200KW at the flywheel and all of a sudden we have a power to weight of 222kw/Tonne.

Identical to a new porsche 911 turbo...

Take the offer of the bloke with the 275rwhp SP and go for a ride, id be willing to be 275hp in a miata will be the fastest accelerating car you have ever been in.

Take a ride in a turbo mx5 before you decide how much power is fast enough for you.

In fact if you just want to throw the gauntlet at the odd v8 at the lights a fully stripped na6 with some porting, cams, and perhaps a computer will decimate almost all v8's in a traffic light battle.

Cheers,
Dann

What he said.... ^^^
I've been lucky enough to drive a well sorted SP, (thanks Rob...  )and it can be mind blowing.
Also I've been lucky enough to drive a track car with around 350kW, and weighing 900kgs.
I would NEVER want to have that much power on the street, and I have to confess that that amount of power almost scared me shitless, and well and truly exceeded my competency as a driver!
Drive a turbo MX, THEN decide how far you want to go.

Cheers

My red car had close to 200rwhp and it would have weighed not alot more than 800kg's. (never weighed it) But considering i cut out a lot of metal and stripped all the weight, had c.f doors and roof,as well as a f.g boot. It felt quick enough, but still not as fast as i would have liked. I would say around 300rwhp would be getting closer to making me happy. That's my goal for the nb i am building - 800kg's and 300hp. So that gives you a good indication of the power to weight needed to make you happy.

I want something fast and given the mx5 is a convertible is a plus and a negative. Story of my life mx5's just look too good low low and if possible to be a street car beating ur everyday v8's and skylines on straight and maybe even around the block would be the car I want but if I'm pursuing something not worthwhile please do tell.

Cheers to all the miatanics!

Piece of PI55

For those kind of figures your going to blow your budget a few times over. Your gonna bang heads with your engine builder (you end up being good mates at the end of it though)

Learn to drive an MX fast first then add boost believe me you will shityourself....And you will need to learn how to drive it hard all over again

Engineering will cost you a bomb as well so add that to your budget

As for what you have been told by a few buy a car thats already been built , prooven and reliable........

It's a hell of a lot of fun, but you have to be extraordinarily careful with it.

This car is a no expense spared project, with a lot more than just the engine work... If you have 8 times your budget you might get close.

My post quoted above refers to the previous poster's car :D

Hey guys new to this thread,
very good to know the mx5 doesnt need heaps of power to be much faster than everything else
My question is what type of engine (Fast, cheap, reliable pick two haha that was a pretty awesome saying) would be as much of those three as possible?

Like easy to find already hotted up or easy to get good bits and bobs for one when the time comes to make my track mx5.

Cheers!

Depends on your budget and if you have a specific class / series you want to enter?
