Re: 500hp
The cost of this is huge and would never be recovered if you want to sell and move on.
Settle for less and enjoy it, 500 Hp maybe just a bridge too far and you will wish at the end of the day you didnt aim so high. The man hours involved, the time spent running around is never recovered. the lost sleep wondering if that was tight enough or too tightened up too much.
There is a guy on miataturbo at the moment, he is in Florida and he is parting out the whole car a 1996, not because its damaged, but because he cant sell it as a whole for what it owes him. Its a shame because its a nice looking set up.
Built engine currently at 340 BHP but built to go to 550 BHP / turbo / brakes / suspension all the gear to make it go and stop.

Re: 500hp
Just save up the money & go Bullet Roadster. The ADR approved ones have 320Kw supercharged 4L V8 engines. That's 429Hp. Sure it only looks like an MX-5 without being one, but I'd assume it's own built chassis is fully up to the job & would probably do better then an MX-5 modded to run the same power.
The older Bullet Roadsters with the 13BT rotary engine had engineers certification & were also road registerable. Over 300Hp too.
In this video the Bullet is compared to a turbo 1.6L MX-5, one that has been on this forum I think?

Problem is there is no way to legally run any LS engine in a MX5 in Vistoria.
Trust me I have been looking for a loop hole for 4 years now.
The only way to build a V8 MX5 that you can rego is to use the rover motor which just scrapes in for capacity.
YES! Finally someone actually understands. I've said this before but nobody seems to understand that v8 mx5's are NOT legal in Victoria. You won't get it passed and that's why in my opinion if you wanted to be different, go with an sr20det because you can at least have that engineered and on the road in Victoria. Yet nobody wants to listen. The same way rotary conversions aren't legal here.
FFS guys, you do the research. I'm happy to listen if you can prove to me that you can legally run an lsx in your mx5 or a 13b in Victoria
I think the legality of this thing is going to be fairly low down on the list of priorities. The mods to get even 300BHP from a once N/A 4 cylinder engine are going to place the thing outside of what is allowed. To many mods to emissions controls.
Anyway I think the correct thing to say would be that LS series V8's would not be road legal. You could go with a Rover V8 which are actually very very cheap to buy (a mate just picked a 4.0 up for $400) but would be expensive to get to 500BHP. 300BHP and gobs of torque would be easy and reliable. they are also a very very light engine.
An SR20DET would be a good engine to use and certainly cheap to build.

Save the money for a Bullet Roadster http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/private/details.aspx?R=8255216&keywords=bullet%20roadster&tsrc=allcarhome&__Ntk=CarAll&__Nne=15&__Dx=mode%20matchany&__D=bullet%20roadster&silo=1011&seot=1&__sid=12BD157F8E34&__N=1216%201246%201247%201252%201282&__Ns=pCar_RankSort_Int32|1||pCar_PriceSort_Decimal|1||pCar_Make_String|0||pCar_Model_String|0&__Qpb=true&__Ntx=mode%20matchallpartial&Cr=2&__Ntt=bullet%20roadster&trecs=5
At $75,000.. May as well live his 4cylinder 500hp dream LOL. Not exactly saving money on the Bullet!!!

Gordo wrote:I was thinking if you wanted a 4.0 V8 BMW's M3 engine?
cost would be huge but stock it puts out 420HP
Unfortunately the 309kW V8 in the M3 is 3999cc which is (just) over the 3908cc limit for an NA6 (according to the above Pg 18/LA31). But it might be OK for an NA8, which carried a bit more kerb weight (not sure of tare weight)???
Since price is no object in this fantasy world, the V8 from a Ferrari 360 is a potential option at 3586cc with 296-317kW.
Interestingly, the new Ford Coyote V8 (naturally aspirated) might be OK in an NB??? It's 4951cc and puts out 307kW/412hp in the Mustang GT. Engine weight is 444lb / 201kg. It costs only US$7k.

Haha and bragging rights! How many people can say they have Ferrari motor under the bonnet here?

Seriously....no.
Very very few people in the world have finished a Lambo kit let alone building one with a decent standard of finish and performance. They are notoriously hard to finish.
