If you want to also while the engine is off, take the intake pipe from the throttle body off, open the throttle plate and spray the entire inside of the manifold. Let it sit for minutes and then startup the car.

Couldn't that cause hydrologic lock and bend pistons/valves? I thought the engine had to be running so this stuff turns to steam.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

From green_comet's first post
green_comet wrote:These are the instructions on the can, bring the car up to running temp, then turn it off.
Spray half of the can into one of the lines going to the manifold.
Let it sit for about 5-10min, and start it up.
It'll run like crap so keep the revs high, so it doesn't stall.
When the car is running alright and most of the smoke has cleared, unplug that same vacuum line again and empty the other half of the can into the manifold with the car running.
Make sure to keep the revs high or it will die doing this.
Once the can is empty turn off the car, and let sit for another 10min.
Then start it up for more smokey action.
Then once its running clear go for a 15min drive.
I haven't used it but I believe it is a foam, therefore very unlikely to cause a hydraulic lock.

yeah its a foam, and I have never had a problem with it, even when pulling the plugs out and spraying it directly onto the tops of the pistons.

The instructions on the can say warm the engine up then shut it off, and spray half the can in. Then start the motor and spray the rest in while its running. I just spray the first half through the throttle body with a torch so I can see, that way I make sure the foam is coating the whole inside of the manifold.

Hmmm... just did this, and it seems like the car's idle has increased. It now sits on 1000rpm instead of the usual 800/850 mark. Did anyone else get this when they did theirs?

Also, I couldn't get those damned metal L tube sections off to get directly at the throttle body.

So long as it goes down eventually I don't mind, because it means it's done something. It doesn't surprise me that it went up. It just surprises me that after about a 15-20 minute drive it hasn't gone down.

Your idle might have been adjusted at some stage to combat all the gunk in there, now it needs to be reduced again.

I wasn't aware you could adjust the idle on NB's? Isn't it handled by the ECU?

Where's the throttle body valve?

The cable I can play with. If it's still idling high after another drive today, I'll check them out and see if I can tweak it down.

There's an idle speed adjustment screw under a rubber cap beside the throttle body. You've also got to bridge a couple of the terminals in the OBD plug-in point when you do it, but I'm not entirely certain which ones, so won't take a guess :)

Yeah, found the screw (thanks Dave & Les). Seems to have fixed it for the most part. It's still idling a little higher than before, but the screw won't go in any further, so it'll be right.

Meanwhile, the car does feel a bit smoother when under throttle, but I haven't noticed a seat of the pants gain after doing it.

I'll be giving this a go this weekend on my 240000km old NB8B (which has had the EGR connected for all of that time) so we'll see how much smoke comes out!

Make sure you have the video camera handy Liam.
