my gf has a shagged out 1.8 astina 2001 we were going to send to the tip soon. should I be keeping this for a future build for my 93 clubman?

They were the FP or FS or something weren't they?

Which is the best Astina one? I guess the best one don't have the BP4W hi port head?

Re: Low cost engine build
The 323/Astina/Protege/Hardtop/laser only used the BP between 89 and 98ish.
Most of them were Single cam, some carby.
Some of the models did have DOHC heads, but I cant remember what ones they used, I think they mainly used the NA8 style low port head. (or at least a similar one)
Project.R will know more about the specifics of the heads and what changed with them.

Re: Low cost engine build
All DOHC heads on the 1.8 BP Astinas/proteges/lasers are the BP-05 heads.
1994-1996 are hydraulic lifters
1996-1998 are solid shim on buckets lifters
1999 onwards are not BP
I'm using a 1998 head.
In terms of my build, the crank balance is being checked by the machine shop and should be done this week. The head porting is nearly done and will need to have valve seats cut and cams installed. I need to sort out my photo hosting and update the thread.

90-96 were hydro, but the rest of the info is correct.
Astina SP 90-94 were dohc, Astina (no SP) were B8 / BP sohc

Re: Low cost engine build
This is relevant to my interests... especially on the cam front.
I picked up a cheap BP4W with a busted piston, and planning a cheap rebuild to turbo.
Heading over to the US for work in a little while, so planning to pick up stuff while im over there. They do full rebuild kits for these for about US$90 and full sets of BP4W or BPZ3 OEM replacement pistons for US$100.
Just cant decide whether to get lower compression pistons for higher boost, or make a high comp low boost engine. Kind of leaning towards the latter.
All up i doubt it will come in much more than $1k including the turbo bits.

Re: Low cost engine build
You can go hi comp and high boost if you use the correct pistons and computer.

Always make certain you can get max timing on a boosted BP. Timing>boost.
Run 12-13:1 if E85 or just go low as possible for 98.

Sure, but that obviates the budget bit doesnt it? Just depends if i want to stump up an extra $500 or so for Supertech/Wiseco forgies.

Timing is relatively easy with a decent ECU, fuel is more difficult. If it was a dedicated track car I would just run Sucragen E85 like i did on the IPRA car. But this has to take both pump 98 and United E85.
Flex fuel sensor will help there, but a margin of error will be required.

Hey takai, be great if you run a thread on your build, I've just picked up a BP4W on the cheap as well (has a knock ). I'm thinking a turbo build as well.

Re: Low cost engine build
The bottom end is now all together... With the head nearly ready to finish off but it's all on hold atm for another project.
I have a sculpture project that is taking up all my spare time which is due to be installed in a roundabout in 3-4 weeks. The sculpture consists of 5 x 1.5m tall origami pelicans standing on 8 x 4m high heritage timber posts. The pelicans are made out of 4mm stainless sheet that's plazma cut into about 40 triangles then welded together. Per pelican there is nearly 30m of tig weld, so I'm getting good practice with the tig. I think I can complete a full pelican in around 8 hours, but then there is a similar amount of time cleaning them up for painting. 3.5 of 5 are now complete so another week or so and the last couple will be done and then I can get back onto finishing up this engine.

Love the random stuff people get up to when not fiddling with their 5! Post a Pelican pic when in situ?

Re: Low cost engine build
here are the laid out panels ready for assembly.
This is the first pelican that is pretty much ready to get blasted and painted.
The flying pelican. He looks cool with a wing span of around 2.2m or so.
