Hydro clutch
Speedo depends.
NA is mechanical, NB electronic.
Pretty sure the sensors are interchangable between boxes though. (5 speed anyway, not sure about 6 speed)

What do the letters and numbers represent in the ID's every one uses?
Example - NA8C
NA is the model?
8 or 6 is 1.8L or 1.6L?
What is the C or CE?

NA/NB Is the model code.
NA popup headlights, NB fixed lights
6/8 is engine capcity, 1.6 and 1.8
A/B/C is a sort of unofficial way of designating the slight changes, NA was pretty much just 1.6 or 1.8, btut he NB had the 1.8 (in Aust) the entire model.
Since the NB had a change in 1999/2000 to the headlights, engine, and some other bits, they're told apart by NB8A and NB8B (A being first, B second, then C)
The NB8C was pretty much the same as the 8B mechanically, the changes were things like colour, and a fuel light.
Personally I don't know why people bother to designate 8B and 8C.

VIN = vehicle identification number. Thats the same for all cars- i.e. if the VIN plate is attached. Motor manufacturers included codes also for transmissions and all sorts of things- diff ratios etc etc. Many cars also have other data like the plant the vehicle was built in the colour of the trim etc. As HKS said there are other things floating around in the ether and nicknames and the like for all sorts of cars. You can pick MX5s by the VIN and the build date and for some vehicles it can pick the ones that have upgrades done. Mazda can readily identify a car by its VIN and many spare parts guys ask for that info. On one car I have I always get asked and keep it handy because there were different body and configs.

also the mx5/roadster/miata are different depending on their markets. a NB8A in oz is a NB8C in japan.

I'm after the earliest BP motor, which I'm pretty sure was in the pop up headlight mx5, obviously the 1.8L

I think the earliest was actually in the gtr or gtx. The earliest rwd version was indeed the Na8 model. 93 till 97?

If you're talking MX5 only, then yes, NA8 is what you want.
Made from I think 1993 to 1998
edit:
1993 model year had an overlap between 1.6 and 1.8, so if you buy an engine from a 93 make sure to confirm the capacity.

Yeah mx5 only,had to be rwd format.
So I'm guaranteed to get what I want if I get a NA8 from '94-'98 and some of '93
Well actually I'm after whatever BP from a mx5 would be easiest to put gtx familia turbo gear onto,

Should be.
There were a few minor changes during the 93-98 run, but they were just little ancilliary things. I seem to remember the coil packs changing at some stage, and maybe the alternator later on?
But yeah, the engine in them was a 1.8 with Hydraulic lash adjusters, and a normal intake manifold (no VICs butterfly system like the 1999-2000)

Holy crap!
I just got a quote for $1300 for the NA8 motor (just motor) and $500 for the 5sp also NA8!
Are they really worth that or is old mate pulling my chain?
If that is the going rate, it seems it would be way cheaper to rwd convert a 323 motor :-/ as I should be able to get 323 motors for pennies lol

it seems very cheap to me- but it should not be too hard to get some quotes around the traps to confirm.
