In relation to track - rego no probs if you wanted it - just advise Vicroads of change of engine number.

So you can just take the car to vicroads and let them know that you have swapped a 1.8 in? I thought it needed to be engineered
Sorry to thread jack, regarding that offer on the nb8a engine you got, is he the guy from newport? If so i have also bought an engine from him and it runs without issues. I reused the 1.6 sensors, throttle body and coils along with the flyin miata adaptor kit. He use to have the nb8a swap in his car before so you can possibly ask him

No it's all good mate, yeah I'm not 100% sure about it either but everyone I have asked has said that it's just a change of engine at vicroads. I think this is because this is an NA mx5 and that this model had the 1.8 as an option it's ok to do?
So you have a 1.8 swap but no registered? was it a big job to swap those 1.6 bits or can it be done on the same day as the engine is installed? This very well may be the engine he used as it has some of the stuff done to it. I'll give him a call tomorrow.

Re: Bought my first NA!.... it has no engine!
Yep my 1.8 is not registered to the chassis so its pretty much a garage queen atm.
It wasnt too big of a job swapping all the bits over. Once you have the engines side by side you can see the sensors that are different(its the coolant sensors, fan switch and oil pressure sender unit off the top of my head) . I used the flyin miata adaptor kitfor the throttle body and cable and coilpack mounting. Im running an adaptronic so not sure if its diferent to running the standard ecu
$1100 is not a bad deal, i payed a little more for mine 2 years ago

Vicroads didn't care what motor I put in my NA. Mine has a VVT motor, I just told them how I bought it and showed them the proof of purchase and they checked engine numbers and all was fine. Was easy as pie.

Re: Bought my first NA!.... it has no engine!
if the car is going to be registered then the RWC process has to be followed and that means quite a bit of messing about. Engine replacement and seeing that everything works has to be done and vehicle cannot be dríven without a unregistered vehicle permit. It also means visits to LMVT and Vicroads. Getting a rwc may mean quite an expenditure and if one does not have the time and facilities e.g. juggling work and not having a place to work on a car its all a real pain and costs often are much more than just buying a car ready to go even if its appearance is not great.

So that is what the backside of a 1,8 looks like, don't often have the chance to see it this way.

In saying that a back on a 1.8 would look similar regardless.
