My experience with faulty knock sensors is that they cause retard (sense knocking when there isn't any) and cause rather doughy engine response. The NC plugs are changed at 100,000 km. Mine are now at 76,000km and not a miss or ping yet.

Thanks guys, this is all really useful stuff.
FYI, the car has travelled 67,000 kms. but the pinging started a long time ago - probably at 55k. I have tried the nulon and another octane booster/cleaner a couple of times before with only negligible results (a little less pinging for a while). I note you all recommend the BP ultimate though, and that's probably the one fuel I haven't tried so will definitely give that a go.

I'm also going to get my next service done at the Mazda dealer closest to my work - Old Mac at Springwood, instead of my usual place - south City Mazda, and will bring up the points raised here & hopefully get a result - so thanks again!

Thanks

You can always bring it over to my place and I'll have listen for you. I'm over at Jindalee. PM me if you'd like to take up the offer.

Thanks for this offer JBT, I may take you up on that.
cheers

Hi guys,
Thanks again for your help on this. An update - I had the pulleys/tensioners/knock sensor etc all checked out by Mazda and all were fine apparently. Since then, I have been running it purely on BP 98 (with the occasional octane booster/fuel system cleaner thrown in) and it seems a lot happier - a lot less pinging but it is still there sometimes.

I also had the sports muffler from MX5 plus fitted before xmas (which is a work of art and sounds fantastic - very happy, highly recommend it) and I fitted a K&N 57i air cleaner which I bought from the UK. So I don't know if these slight mods would have affected the pinging (probably not - more likely I just can't hear it now ;-) )

cheers

Perhaps the pinging sound was really a loose exhaust baffle?
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.
