I would hazard a guess that gearbox oil is 'quite' aerated...the gears sit in the oil in the bottom of the gearbox and I guess churn it up when they turn? But then aerated oil is sh*t at lubricating no? So it cant be that bad that it is churned in to a froth? I'm with you Dann, would be very interested to know.

What pumps are available that could do the job? How thick is super hot gear oil?

Silly ideas, would there be enough of a cooling affect provided in adding extra material to the gearbox....Like the sump on the A series engine found in the mini...

Mini rally cars understeer like a bitch in mud because of those fins.
Pretty funny actually.

All Minis understeer.
That's why they have handbrakes and drivers learn to left foot brake.

Could you just keep it simple and not use a pump, keep an oil cooler below the standard oil level in the box and just let convection through the oil transfer the heat to the cooler. :?:
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Adapt something like this....

That's what exactly what I had in mind. The only difference is the filter. I was intending on using a engine filter mount so I can monitor temp.
If it aint on the rev limiter then you shouldn't be behind the wheel!

That would be difficult due to the height of the gearbox and the oil levels.

You don't need a filter block to monitor temps, you can get in-line housings.

I have seen pumps advertised as suitable for gearboxes and diffs in my googling, so that should not be hard to source. Just installing a pump, lines and cooler will increase your oil quantity, itself a help in controlling temps. I am assuming that the slope of the temperature gain is milder than that for the engine oil, as the heat input will be lower, so you will probably only need a pretty basic cooler. I know of one turbo car where the intention was to run a barrel cooler, but I don't know the outcome, or even if it was installed.

If you datalog the temps you will be able to assess how much cooling you need. Even just taking the temperature of the casing (below the oil level) after a race would be a starting point...

Anything on the big board on this? MT.net?

Friend of mine in Singapore had one...$250K! He said there was a "GTR tax" on everything just because it was a GTR.

This might sound silly. But howabout trying to eliminate the cause of the problem, the proximity of the exhaust? Anyway of getting something difft constructed further away from the gearbox?

Once you know the temparature of the oil after a hard run, perhaps these guys will have a solution. One gearbox oil they mention is rated at 100c for example.

I intend on wrapping the exhaust and aiming the screamer pipe away from the gearbox. For some reason the gearbox and tunnel have always been really warm in my car even before it was turbo.

I wanted to use a filter block for ease of selecting filters and replacing when servicing. I don't want to have to chase down an over priced filter that takes two weeks to get in when I can use the same filter for the engine oil as the gearbox and it screws on and off. Instead of an inline one the would be messy.
