Crankshaft pully stuck! How did you remove yours?

Crankshaft pully stuck! How did you remove yours?
1red5, my old Aust delivered '89 na6 suffered SNC failure at under 100k kms prior to the timing belt & water pump being replaced in '98, after it had been only serviced at scheduled intervals by Mazda dealers, which of course does not rule out the possibility of poor workmanship. Fortunately it was not any of the dealers which we are familiar with through the forum.

My "100k" service was done early, at 85,000km. My mechanic mate and I did it slow and carefully and dedicated a whole day to it. Car now sits on 149,000km.

So yours was almost certainly as it was when it left the factory. I didn't realise there'd been failures before anyone had played with it. Maybe Mazda's engine assemblers could have a bad day too.

Phil, I purchased it with 3k kms on the clock in Feb '91 from a lady who bought it new from the Melbourne suburban Mazda dealer where she worked. It had had its 1500 km service done where she worked & then from then on it had its scheduled services done prior to or just on schedule at a couple of other Mazda dealers in Melb suburbs. The vehicle was completely standard, & apart from scheduled servicing nothing else had been done to it, nor had it been to any other workshop.
The day it failed I was returning to Canberra from a meeting in Syd after opting to drive. I'd noticed a faint harmonic sound that morning when I started the car, but needed to get to Syd for the meeting so thought I'd check it later! Fortunately, it failed north of Campbelltown on the way back, so Liverpool Mazda fixed it along with timing belt & water pump which, from memory, were only a few thousand kms away. Never had another problem with it & I sold it in mid '04 with about 185k kms.
The day it failed I was returning to Canberra from a meeting in Syd after opting to drive. I've just been hit with this problem.
Someone mentioned that this can hit the inexperienced mechanic, but that is definately not the case with me. It hit me, not the mechanic from a long time ago.
The car had the 100,000K service at Mazda where they didn't put it together properly. It can't be seen properly and so gets discovered when there is a problem. In my case, the pully was wobbling. Further examination showed that they keyway was loose and had caused the crank to be irrepariably damaged, requiring a new crank or new engine.
This in no way has hurt the inexperienced mechanic who did my timing belt service 7 years ago and there is no way of proving that Mazda did a poor service so long ago.
I had to go with a replacement motor, as they pully was so stuck it wouldn't come off.
Perhaps those of you out there should get it checked to see if it is on properly before you have to replace your motors.
