They can be heated affected... work ok when cold then play up as the engine heats them up.

Yep, replaced leads, plugs, coilpacks and cam angle sensor (which fixed the idle)

Car still struggles to rev above 4k, and sound like a track...

Liam this sounds EXACTLY like what happened to me a few weeks back, I also broke down near an auto store bought plugs and a plug socket

I limped it home (knowing I may be killing the cat).

I suspected a coil pack failure (over fueling causing it to sound like a rally car) but also changed the O2 sensor in the process.

One think I noticed was my 02 sensor wasn't as tight as it should be so I don't know if that had also effected things (and added to the noise).

After replacing both the coil pack and 02 sensor the cars up and running again.

I was lucky that I had both on my spare engine.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Interesting! I might go an make up a LED test light and see if the car is complaining about the O2 sensor... :)

Turns out the timing belt had jumped 2 teeth, at the crank no less!

The timing belt is only 12000km old, so it's a bit surprising. Jason is quite concerned as he's had 2 of these belts jump recently... He's replaced it with a gates timing belt.

So that's fixed, now the aircon is being serviced (only 350 grams of gas in there instead of 650) and whatever leak is there fixed.

Should have the car back tomorrow or thursday! Fingers crossed! (although I guiltily admit enjoying driving to work in the hire car, it's auto, and big and roomy and much better suited to sitting in traffic than the MX5)

How did this finish up Liam? Dave's car had a dummy spit on Friday - symptoms not dissimilar. We swapped coil packs and cam angle sensor to no avail, so looking for further clues... might need to check the belts.

Car is back, and feels fantastic again. :D

I do think the coilpacks have died as well, haven't confirmed it yet though...

Hey Liam,

As stated by Bigdog, having a few issues... When I dissapeared on the phantom Santa run it was because a coilpack was breaking down. Thankfully easy to diagnose, and great to have the dogs car for spares swapout! Cost me $250 with trade discount (thanks wifey! :) )
I am about to swap the crank angle sensor (Dave from Mania very kindly loaned one to test with) so will report soon...

Rgds,
Dave

best part was Dave's boys watching and giving him a bit of the old "well, what do you expect when you start modifying things? You young fella's and your hotted up cars!" type banter :P  :P

And if you weren't all standing around putting Sh1t on me  - you would have noticed the dodgy vacuum hose going to the MAP sensor and not taken my word for it that all the vacuum lines were OK!
Thanks and kudos go out to Daniel D. for pointing me in the right direction - nothing like experience and common sense when it comes to these things... unfortunately they are far too uncommon these days!
Happy it was a cheap fix, however now I have to change the Crank angle sensor back again!

Cheers,
Dave
