I don't know much about turbos, but from what I've read on the Forum, AVO are at least reasonalbly well regarded. And MX5 Mania have gone from using the Wolf3D to Adpatronic. The base AVO kit for the NA6 seems popular in Vic & other nanny states as it complies with EPA requirements. Jake (Blue94t) elaborates in the following:

Without knowing the background to your vehicle, I'd echo Fatty's comment about turning it back into a 'Factory SP', obviously with the Forum discussed improvements thrown in if that was the way you wanted to go.

yeah, point taken but I am in WA. We have no yearly inspections, no EPA testing, no engineering, no nothing really. The only way to get pinged is if a nosey copper lifts the bonnet and then I just say "whats the problem officer? It is an SP"

The worst case scenario is I get royally pinged and have to go on "Road/Rally" rego- which looks the same as a normal rego plate.

I am not saying I know it all and welcome the input of WA guys who actually know what the go is.

As to whether it is an SP: no, it is not. No 1 is the first SP, this is just the prototype. All the gear was pulled.

As long as you want valid insurance on your car, the car will have to be re-registered as a turbo MX5 legally on your rego papers through DPI/Transport. Valid insurance is not Shannons saying they will insure you for $30k agreed value and all your mods are listed. The clause that gets you is that at the time of a claim, all the modifications have to be legal. If you do want valid insurance, then your car will require emission testing to pass. Not cheap these.

Plus I know for a fact (my mate is now an Inspector in DPIWA) that the rules now have made it so that any such modifications will require an application to be submitted with a DPI approved mechanical engineer as consultant to sign off before you start doing anything.

NAs with AVO kits get away with it as the emissions tests have been done. Not so for NBs.
It was much much easier 10 years ago :frown:

Or you can do it anyway - and risk getting a defect notice and having to revert the car to standard to pass pits and put everything back again. Andrew has.

Otherwise, like Okibi, you will have to consider an SE or SP and do what you will with those models. We have already managed to get 305 rwhp at the lowest HKS actuator spring setting on Simon's SE. I won't bore you with how much more he could have got but anymore would have definitely started breaking things.

Hope this has given you some food for thought as I have been through all this with so many MX5 customers when I was running Wheelspin Performance.

Well first you need to prove that you will be using it for competition.
So you will need your CAMS level 2NS license.
Then you need a CAMS approved official to sign off on the car.
Then get it log booked.

And you can do whatever you want to the car as long as you still have mirrors, lights, indicators etc.

BUT you can only drive it:
1) between where the car is kept to the competition event
2) to a workshop

If a cop pulls you over, you may be asked to prove this via an entry form or the police could follow you to the workshop/event in question.

Also being not 'normal' street registered will affect the car's value (if that is a concern). And you wouldn't get any comprehensive or 3rd party vehicle insurance.

Talk to Warwick in the club or at the next Autokhana at AHG. His NA8 is B class registered.
