If you drive without insurance you are an idiot.
It also sounds like you drive like an idiot on the street.
Great combination

Anyone notice a pattern here? :)

Seriously though: 3rd party property insurance shouldn't be optional.

we're giving you sound advice. advice from people who have had experience, rather than letting you do all the mistakes yourself.

and i think you've got your priorities mixed up re insurance v wheels.

I second all those recent replies. Your Mum is absolutely right. Show some responsibilty and MATURITY kid and get your car insured!

At least third party property will save you paying for someones Mercedes when you skid into them showing off what a lousy driver you are! Lets just pray you don't kill someone in the process.

Sliq, I guess unless it's a paddock basher.

"Hi insurance company. I'd like to insure my paddock basher. Existing damage is just a tree growing in the boot, a family of feral cats living on the back seat and half a cow left on the front from when we got drunk that night. It'll probably buff out though"

yakob,
It looks like you have hit a nerve here with some of the forum members. I agree 100% that if must have at least 3rd party vehicle insurance if you can't afford comprehensive. This is cheaper and at least covers you if damage occurs to another person's vehicle (be it a Commodore/Falcon or a expensive Mercedes) :)

I would suggest that any more funds you have available are spent on 3rd part insurance and the best tyres you can afford to buy. For insurance, tyre suggestions & prices of such tyres, do a quick search as I believe there are a few threads on the subject 8)

Also it might be prudent to remind you that it was lucky no one was standing where your car went over the kerb or this might be a totally different conversation that we would be having

Oh and I'm sure Quicksilver meant that "Let's pray that you DON'T kill someone in the process"

I agree with all of the above comments. At the very least put the money into 3rd party insurance. I have compresive in my mum's name which is around $500 a year. However as i'm not a named driver (that would make it around $2000 a year), my excess is $2000. Financially this work as I haven't made a claim yet and dont plan to do so for quite some time, within 2 years of no incident driving I'm ahead if I do have an accident.

I would also highly recomend that you do either a Murcotts or John bowe driver training course. I've done stage one and two and it was a really good thing for me to do and I think you would benefit too if you went in with the right attitude. The courses really helped me know my car better, understand what to do and what the car will do in an emergency situation and tought me the right attitude to have towards driving.

sliq wrote:trust me mate, insurance should and MUST be #1 on the list. like wun said, wheels come and go.

i have had numerous friends who have had to fork out thousands for fixing other people's cars because they weren't insured.

paying about $1k per year is a small price if the other person's car is written off.

What he said

My NB8A cost 2k to insure I'm with Justcar but i did the Adjust thing thye have which brings my insurance down $500 but ups my excess $500 so I'm paying 1500 atm

So far I have had to make a claim

being an idiot and planting it in the wet on an on ramp = car goes sideways and off the road

anyway I'm so glad i had insurance because the damage was 4k+
but on the upside i ended up with aftermarket rims and complete aftermarket full exhaust sys
before anyone says anything no scamming was involved I asked the accessor nicely and he let me go aftermarket instead of replacing with expensive genuine parts

Things happen unexpectedly i know someone who just picked up her brand new Mazda 3 SP23 yesterday and unforunately someones did the change lanes and not look and did a bit of damage to the front d/s in under 24hrs of picking it up
Glad it wasn't her fault but insurance is always there to get the other person to pay for the damage

Anyway highly recommend Insurance

Just to add to the chorus GET INSURANCE!

I was hit by an uninsured driver a few years back. My partner works for a large law firm, the guy who hit our car had a very uncomfortable time getting hounded by solicitors till he paid. You could end up been in debt for a very long time to pay for someones repairs.

On the plus side good to hear your car is fixed.

if he was being "hounded" by solicitors to pay up, then that'd be professional misconduct

i don't want to sound rude or intrusive, but i am curious as to why you think insurance is second priority to new wheels and tyres?
