Ring the Castrol technical service- how does an ester wear addiitive get attracted by a magnet- try it for yourself. Would a co of this stature put out a product which could not be used wherever a magnetic sump plug was installed? When products are designed they use fmea's( failure mode effect analysis) and all possible failure modes are considered. The story of the SP I would reject wholly as an urban myth- the root cause has not been divulged.
As for the subject itself what benefit does anyone think they can get from such a product and why don't OE manuf bother?

We are a whacky mob down here in Vic
As for your FMEA it is blatantly obvious that the TIC effect was not considered....
Oh well, we can only try

Surely the magnetic field generated around the coilpacks would be better than an old HDD magnet anyway. That would mean all the magnetic particles would be held on the underside of the cam cover.

All you'd have to do to change the oil and get all the particles out at the same time is to put the car on Bruce's rottisserie with the engine running, spin it upside down and kill the motor immediately and then drain it via the oil filler cap.
