Calibrated run it is then.. i'll let you know when Adam.. i orgranise another group thing for us.

probally a saturday morning dyno run and then lunch at some place where we can admire the view.. e.g. rundel street.

Air Fuel Ratio ??

Postby tasroadster » Tue Jun 20, 2006 9:12 pm

How do you (can you) measure the AFR ?

I see electronic kits that claim they can..... do they connect to the existing exhaust gas sensor on the exhaust manifold ?

Is there a cost effective way to do this with some accuracy ?

Thanks for your help.

cost effective way???

hmmm well $600 is around the cheapest mark that I have found for a stand alone system to record your afr.

You'll need a wideband sensor to do it all. A unit do something useful to the data, something that can measure between 10:1 - 18:1. and a display of some sort. either a digital/ana disp.

here is a bare basic unit that can do it.

http://techedge.com.au/vehicle/wbo2/

it can't do much else though.

you can buy a WOLF 3D with a hand controller for about 1400-1500 and that will do everything you could possiblly want it to do for your car.

At dynos they attach the sensor to your exhaust outlet.

It's US dollars, but still good value. If you're going to order one I recommend this place:
DIYAutoTune.com

I've just bought my MegaSquirt stuff from them and the service was really good (and fast).

dyno run with 14 deg

Postby trader » Fri Jun 23, 2006 11:11 am

Those dyno figures for your NA certainly are amazing astroboysoup. Must have been a good motor when stock. 18 months ago at a club meet my NA peaked at 62kw. I had the old lock stewart CAI and extractors from I know not where and 14 degs. A bog stock mx5 also hit 62 Kw. Since then I've changed the extractors (to those on ebay and had them ceramic coated),put on a Simota filter and had Russelb/Dave do the tyre relocating cat back exhaust. A couple of weeks ago I got hold of Spikeys JAM ecu. With all these changes it was back to the Dyno where peak power was 71.2 kw. I would have liked to do a dyno with the ecu being the only change but that wasnt to be. At least I now have a really smooth power curve right to cutout. Max Torque (145NM) is is at 3500 rpm but hardly drops off, and 12:1 AFR at wot. Car really screams now. On the way home I called in at Carco Exhaust where I was put in the seat of Russelb's supercharged 'weapon'. I am now throughly deflated - maybe back to the drawing board!

Hi Bam,

I got a 2kw improvement dynoing before and after, but more importantly it looks to have cured my lean running up top. They tried a bit more pressure but lost a KW !The dyno was pretty old but I guess it at least provided a direct before and after comparison.

Seat of the pants its seems more responsive or quicker to react to throttle inputs.

I am going to the Vic Club day in the morning so it will be interesting to see what it does there, although plugs and leads etc may have deteriorated so a comparison to 12 months ago on power may not be conclusive, but the AFR should be .

My car has always been strong down low and with a fairly useable torque curve so i am hoping that that hasn't changed.

Hi Bam,

Bam , the jury is still out on this.

At the club dyno day I got 73.7kw and 2097 torque compared to 71.2 and 1953 last year but was stiil running an AFR of around 14.3 at just about all revs.
I obviously have another problem re the AFR so it is hard to say what advantage the Malpassi kit would give if that wasn't there.

I will be looking into the AFR as it is far too lean so will let you know how i go,

Peter.

Hi Peter,

The dyno is done on WOT. So doscount O2 sensor.

It might be that the Throttle Position Sensor is not reading properly. Or the injectors need attention.

See yoiu soon

I've been considering getting one of these!

Has anyone used one yet?
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Bam, I took it to a local tuning shop and they played with the fuel pressure and on their dyno it picked up around 10kw(remember it was running lean).

It is now running a Lamba of around 8.5 and putting out 86kw.I will try to get it back on the Caulfield Jag dyno for a "real"comparison.

I am not sure what that means for you as you will probably be running rich if you have a typical Mx5 AFR.

Hope you mean 0.85 or that motor's going to get awfully flooded! :D

Be aware that the 1.8's have a learning ECU (ie closed loop feedback offsets are also used for open loop offsets) and it may compensate for any fuel pressure changes you've made...

Thanks Matty, yes 0.85!!!!!

I guess I can only run it for a while and then put it back on the Dyno to check, although it doesn't sound too promising in the long term if the thing corrects itself back to where it was!!!

They checked all the sensors etc and could not find anything wrong.

Basically they cleaned the injectors and then set the fuel pressure using the dyno to get what they thought was a good result.

They are not however MX5 experts but do prepare a few racing cars so seemed to know how to use the dyno effectively.
